Hi,

I'm looking into getting a Road bike... don't know much about them.
Anyone can give me some pointers ?

There are a number of good shops in Montreal: ABC Bicycles and Le Yeti on the Plateau, McWhinnies in NDG, Bicycles Rossi is a good shop in Lachine. La Cordee also stocks a good collection of bikes and is located near the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

Google the shop that suits your location and go talk to them.

It is my experience that you should avoid large shops because the service you get can be lacking- I have done a great deal of shopping at Cycles Gervais Rioux on St. Laurent and have never left unsatisified. The fit-kit that will accompany your purchase is perhaps the most important service any bike store can offer. The only down side of Gervais Rioux is the high prices- you can get a cheaper bike at ABC.

I hear mixed ratings about Cycles Gervais Rioux : it seems that either you like them or you don't. They are definitely catering to the racing crowd.

Here are a few other good ones:

– ABC : I never bought a bike there, but their parts department is great, with good prices.

– Cycles Performance : Sells road bikes, but also some touring bikes and they used to sell Burley tandems. Great personalised service. I have sent a few people there and they are willing to customize a touring bike without problems. I also know a few short women that appreciated the service.
– Cycles Régis : Also sells lots of road bikes and seems to do good fitting; they also have a few hybrids and very good service.

– Pignon sur roues : This one mostly sells commuter bikes. So if you look for a hybrid, or for parts for one, or for a mid-range bicycle, that's a good place to go.

– JR Cyclery (on Rachel Street just East of Saint-Laurent Blvd.) : It's not a bike shop, but rather a bike repair shop. Turnaround is usually faster than other LBSs and they won't laugh at your 1970 bike.

If you live near amherst hit up velo espresso right by sainte catherine
Thats my LBS and the guys are great and give great advice ! They seem a little intimidating at first but you gotta ask your questions. Good prices too!!!

Velo expresso is sell a 10 bucks chain for 22$ or so and had no idea what a half link was
So I'm not too sure...

Try Cycle Technique on Notre-Dame near Atwater. They love bikes and work very diligently. Really worth a look.

that's possible, dd you say it in french or in english? maybe they just didn't know the term you were using and maybe they were used to calling it something else, that's always possible.

I will admit that velo espresso does not always have the best prices for parts, ABC cycles seems to have the best prices in montreal for parts, and the mechanics there give great advice.

What I did like about velo espresso is that they give a lot of great advice and that they give great do it yourself fix alternatives to everyday problems.

For the record, I'm not affiliated with that bike shop in any way other than being a very satisfied customer.
I showed up one day asking some questions about wheelbuilding and they've gone out of their way to help me.

I'm just being precocious, I wouldn't be surprised if someone really did register to promote his own business, happens quite often on one of the board I visit (RedFlagDeals.com)
I appologies if you found that offensive, I guess not everyone like my sense of humour...

Anyhow, if you're still building wheels or need further help, drop by RightToMove, you can get spokes for cheap (25cents/ea with nipples, some are DTs while other are generic stainless) althrough they don't carry as many lenght as LBS do and by no means they're competing against them since the coop is not here to make money

i personally saw it as a suspicious post as well... no pun intended... lots of business have that and when a newcomer recommends a place straight off the bat, a little yellow flag gets turned on... nothing to do w/ you or any poster... but just experience from forums in different fields... it's the same in car related forums, where i'm a mod in a few and admin in others.
Thanks for the info... still haven't purchased the bike due to attenuated circumstances... been keeping the old one. I think I'll wait for fall deals.

I have no problem with a little yellow flag getting turned on in your head. But there's no need to frame someone else's post by saying it sounds fishy with no other facts to back that up. Keep the thought in your head, and trust that other people reading will also their own little yellow flags that they listen to. Or not. We are all forum-savy at this point - there is no need to police an otherwise legitimate post.

I can assure you that I have no other affiliation to Cycle Technique other than being a very satisfied customer. I didn't even know the place existed until a few months ago, even though it's 5 blocks from my home, to be honest.

Late to this discussion, my 2cents, all good shops, but avoid Mcwhinnie's they tend to sell you whatever they can even if it does not fit. Another high-end shop is Martin swiss on Victoria street in Westmount.

I have to agree about McWhinnie's. Unfortunately, from experience I also don' think Martin Swiss is a good place either. They have very high prices and a strange customer service ambiance. The tech staff are good, but the front of the store is always disappointing.

Sadly, there are a small small number of good bike shops in Montreal.

Your right about the strange customer service ambiance at Martin Swiss. I vowed never to set foot in there after experiencing their unique brand of customer service, but after a good friend began working there things improved a great deal. Pop in once and a while to shoot the breeze and buy whatever odd and ends I need.
