    High Park Cycle ?

    QUOTE FROM CRAIG'S LIST, TORONTO:

So I went by High Park Cycles the other day to get a dose of old European steel and incoherence, and it was closed down! There was a sign on the door with a lot of legal mumbo jumbo. Now I see Jacob is selling a bike shockingly similar to one that hung in the window for years at HPC. Anyone know what's up? I hope he's OK!

    Any word?

Hey, I posted this to CL, lazily misappropriating the for-sale section for my question.

ps. I edited the original to change Igor to Jacob - there's a real difference!

    Alas,
I went by again last night and it was still closed, with the same sign. The F. Moser is still hanging in the window...

hey oblique, the rest of this thread was a year old! I wonder what happened last year, and if the same thing's going to happen again.

But indeed, it's closed down and there's a bailiff's note -- looks like they owed $16k (or $19k?) in back rent. The contents are going to be sold off as a lot according to the signs all over the window.

Funny, I work down the street and I walked by there just today.
They were closed for a while last year but reopened for a little bit this spring - but now theres the bailiffs notices, not a good sign. It appears they're going to auction the contents of the store in a single lot, who ever wins gets a lot of good gear. Too bad.

Yeah, the sale was advertised on Craigslist and Kijiji. I went there (you had to enter through the rear door, which seemed suspicious at first). The sale was being coordinated by a group of young guys (early 20's), and I heard the words "my brother over there" a few times, so they might have been family members. They said they were portuguese, though, and they referred to the previous owner (Jan/Jon Bunco) as "the other guy", so they were definitely a new group that took over.

They mentioned that they were keeping the high end frames that were hanging at the front window, and some of the most obvious high end stuff. There was a huge pile of wheels they said they needed to sort out to sell at a later time. Basically they had piled up some stuff in the back room (boxes of cable guides, some lose and unmatched derailleurs and brake levers, stems, pedals, etc.).

Then if you had specific requests from the front of the shop, one of the guys would take a couple of customers at a time there, and you were able to roam around (some) and make an offer for accessories, skating stuff, etc. One of the guys said they were all riders, so they would be keeping the jerseys.

I spend around an hour there, and I saw from the desperate bargain hunter that would crawl atop carboard boxes (crushing things on his way up) to reach the top shelves frantically opening boxes to try to find a gem, to the leisurely guy just looking around, to the lady who wanted to buy a bike (she was redirected to Dr. Jamie's a couple of blocks away), to the guy who offered to buy the whole shop's contents.

So who this group was, I don't know (a guy who asked got a harsh response), and it was not clear whether they were with the landlord, the attorneys, or whether they took over the property and it's contents. They did say they wanted to get rid of some of the stuff to make some room, organize what was left, and then have a proper auction. I guess we'll have to stay tuned.

Just noticed this on Craig's List today:

Some of the rare, new old stock frames have become available for sale.
These are from the Bailiff's recent auction of John's unsold inventory, from HIGH PARK CYCLE.
Many are from the 1970's, and have never been sold to the public.
Drop by the store tomorrow, to see some of the newly acquired inventory.
Vintage Reynolds 531 standard-gauge double-butted tube sets available.
NOS frames with forged Campagnolo road dropouts.

The above refers to July 12.

Swung by the area this weekend and met Jan working at Dr. Jamie's where he seemed busy. They had a police bike auction the past weekend.

The old High Park Cycle location was been completely gutted and it looks theyre prepping it for a new tenant. I chanced upon the owner (Jan's former landlord) when I walked in there with my bicycle but he wasnt very personable nor candid about answering any queries and he looked strung out.

Swung in there the other weekend and besides not yet organizing their very large inventory there is nonetheless a large selection of vintage bikes, frames and groupos to choose from, especially in the 56 - 58 range.

I stopped by Dr. Jamie's and the place now looks like Jon's High Park Cycle: stuff piled up with little or no organization, impossible to get beyond 1 meter from the entrance, and non-existent customer service. So I ended up looking from the outside as Jon Buco took 6-7 minutes to just go from his repair stand in the back to a set of boxes on the shelves to get a spare part, the place was that crowded (with random components in the way).

I'm not saying that Dr. Jamie's was well organized before, but at least you could get in, talk to the guys, see what they had to offer... I guess Jon's old ways will live on at this new location...

Well, those who miss good old Jan Buco (or similar spelling) from High Park Cycles, worry not no more, 'cause reports have surfaced of what seems to be Jan's long lost brother from overseas (or maybe his distant cousin).

This person has been spotted at Mojo's Cycles on Queen West (no reports have been received about Mojo's Cycles' other location on Dundas West). Jan's purported relative displays some familiar traits: if a customer comes in with an issue that could be solved in 10 minutes, he harshly tells the person to wait, and that customer can be waiting for 20 or 30 minutes, while the alleged relative takes his time to search for an old part in a pile of junk here, in another pile of junk there, a part that is not really needed nor required (hint: if you can fix something in 10 minutes, do it, get the money, and leave the customer satisfied; then you can go back to finding that part that you don't immediately need anyway).

The shop also shows signs of a probable family relation: stuff piled up right and left, no apparent organization, and just getting a simple tool requires turning the place upside down.

All kidding apart, does anyone have any references (good or bad) about the old guy at the Queen West location of Mojo's Cycles? Is he the next one in line to go belly up?
