Hwy 1 "The Scenic Route" Ontario

havent posted here in a while.

i've recently come into lots of free time so i've gotten back on my bike.

the other day i did 50km in west oakville and yesterday I did the Toronto Waterfront trail and the Don trail for 60km.

I remember driving near Owen Sound a few years ago and taking hwy 1 the scenic route home. maybe it was wiarton, i cant really remember.

i remember it being beautiful and I now want to cycle it. is it cyclist friendly and if anyone has a good route for up there, can you please let me know? I'm looking for 50 - 100km max.

Cheers!

It sounds like you're talking about CR 1 that runs between Owen Sound and Wiarton, hugging the shore of Georgian Bay. It is a great road to cycle. There's virtually no traffic, and the views are great. And there's a great ice cream place in big Bay.

that's the one!

I want to leave Toronto at 7a and get up to Owen Sound for 9a, then ride it to Wiarton and back, then head back home after a good meal. I mapped the general area and it looks to be 100k spot on. I don't know where in Owen Sound you get on CR1. I'll have to figure that out.

thank you for this though, i remember driving it years ago and it was BEAUTIFUL! i'm happy to know it's good for cycling too.

Sounds like a lovely ride.

Please report back on traffic and how it went.

so i did this ride and took grey road 17 back. i thought it was a great ride! i wasn't dressed for it as it was rather chilly.

i'm in no way a professional cyclist as you can see by my average times but here it is.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/227979300

i did some detours to kick it up to 100km. there's 2 or 3 short hills with a pretty serious grade that gets your heart pumping.

there was zero traffic, i can probably count on my hands how many cars I saw. there are zero traffic lights (except in owen sound and wiarton) and there are zero stop signs (except in the cities)

i did turn down one gravel road accidently which was about 500metres long but it's avoidable. I just happened to map it on my gps and was following my map.

if you look at the map, there's a road just west of the Wiarton core that i took south to loop back, that is a gravel road. i won't take that in the future.

all in all a great ride!
