After one week of seeing 147 hits and no reply action upon this thread, am I to conclude that there is no "Best bike shop in Montreal."?

LOL

It's a bit more about the people behind the counter than the bike shop itself. I wouldn't try to pick the "best", but if there's a shop near my house that understands what I'm saying and is able to help, they get my business.

The parts they can get depends on the distributors they deal with. If you have something specific in mind, show a few shops your shopping list.

Haven't run into a dishonest mechanic, but there have been times where I've had misunderstandings. Even then, I've been offered solutions to improve the situation.

Good luck with your bike project.

I would say C&L Cycles is the one I prefer.

I think you will find that MEC will only order parts that they usually stock. The largest bike shop in Montreal is ABC Cycles on Park Ave. They have a large shop and carry a very large inventory of parts. I use Martin Swiss in Westmount as it is close to home.

I like Velo JR on rue Rachel. It's run by Jaime, a Bolivian transplant who has serviced bikes for me and my kids for over 20 years. His prices are not the lowest in town, but they are reasonable and he keeps a wide price range of components in stock. It's on the bike path heading towards Mt-Royal on Rachel and he has a compressor outside the shop for when your tires are low.....

Cycles St-Laurent, 1344 Du College near Cegep St-Laurent. The 2 owners are very nice guys, easy to talk to and get along with. Plus their skills are amazing. I've purchased all of my bikes there since 1999 and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Even though I don't live in Montreal anymore (living in Nunavut now), I always take my vacations in Montreal and spend a great deal of time at the shop and catching up with those 2. They have my 2013 Giant Trance X2 in storage actually, good excuse for another trip to see them!

I have been to so many local bike shops. Most of them can do the job, but they are often not polite and arrogant. Best service: La Bicycletterie JR on Rachel East. These guys are so nice and patient. Love this place.

"Martin Swiss" on Victoria all the way south - recommend these guys, they know what they doing. Have a "personal touch" if you will. They work with TREK bikes as a primary brand. Another nice place is "Cycle Neron Montreal" - these guys are very happy to help with many questions and so on. Quite friendly. Cycle Neron primary brand is Specialized.

Amen. They're honest , and know what they're doing.

I brought in a cheap bike , asked them to fix it up. They reluctantly agreed after telling me I'm crazy for wanting to restore such an ugly bike. But in the end, their work was impeccable. Their prices are average, but the expertise of Howard Lee is quite impressive...

The best bike shop is probably more of a personal opinion. I know most of the ones listed above and I would say ABC is probably the best price but Cycles St. Laurent has better service. I use Synergy in Point Claire Village and am happy with them.

MEC is not really a bike shop. Their prices are ok on their own products but not better than most LBSs on other products. The difference for me is that when I show up at Synergy on Friday 1 hour before closing with a problem that I need fixed for a ride on Saturday morning, they're going to try to help me out.
