Going to build my own - What frame should I start with?

After riding a few ebikes, I have decided to go ahead and build a Bafang powered ebike.

I will be riding the bike prolly 80% of the time on the road and off road on gravel the rest of the time. Always in challenging steep hill country.

As I look through my garage, I have a Trek hybrid (aluminum frame, max 42mm tires, carbon front fork, rim brakes), a Felt gravel bike (disc brakes, aluminum frame, carbon front fork, running 38mm tires), and a Surly disc trucker ( 26" wheels, steel frame, disc brakes).

Would you recommend putting a 1kw Bafang on any of these?

Should I be looking at a front or full suspension mountain bike? If so, which model would you suggest as some of them will not have room for the battery pack. I have a good feel for my size but not for what is available...I would like to buy a used bike, if I need a different frame.

Thanks

They all sound fine for the type of riding you want to do, just stay away from front hub motors on carbon forks. Beyond that I'd say pick the one you like the best because you'll ride it more than the others. That's how e-biking goes: once you get a taste of riding with that extra burst of power available, you tend to keep grabbing that one.

Thanks Joe, the wife has nixed modifying the Trek as we have matching ones. I think I will go with the Surly as it wasn't getting ridden much and it does have everything but a suspension front fork. I haven't seen any decent MB with lock out fron forks up on Craigslist.

I am still several weeks away from returning to the USA, but will start doing the research on the conversion kit.
