Since it's only $300 for the bike and motor and battery, it makes me wonder just how cheaply a regular bike of better quality, such as a Giant or Specialized, could be converted to be an electric bike. I don't have any solid knowledge on this subject, but I assume an e-bike is simply a regular bike with an added battery and motor. Is this true? Is there a way to easily upgrade my Specialized Hardrock to an e-bike? I went to my Specialized dealer and asked about it, but he said they don't stock any of the parts to do that and haven't gotten any requests for it. Highly unusual since this is a college town, and this shop is in the area right next to the college.
If you are going to use the bike regularly I would suggest converting your own or paying a premium for the bike. Cheap bikes...well, say no more, you get what you pay for. If you are just going to be toodling around your neighborhood go for the cheapie but if you are going to be commuting or doing anything where you will have to depend on the bike the extra money/quality will be worth it. Ebikes, while becoming more and more common in some places still do not use very standardized parts, whether you buy it at ur neighborhood cheap-mart or special order it so if the quality is better u will not have to worry so much about replacement parts. It is also to your advantage to put it together yourself because you will be in better shape to know what to do when you are sitting on the side of the road because your bike with a fully charged battery will not go one inch further. Also cheap bikes mean cheap SLA batteries which will not produce very dependable results with the passing of time. Look at the long haul
I took it out for a spin last night and again just now. I wanted to see if it would get me up the killer hills I have by my place, and it seemed to have the grunt to get me up them while pedaling in the bottom gear. I drove a Bionx kit around on Saturday, and LOVED it, but it was 2100.00 on the bike they had for sale. I thought about grabbing the kit and putting it on my old bike, but at 1695.00 just for the kit, it was too much for me. I am paranoid of thieves, and knew that would be a thief-magnet, So I thought, to get my feet wet, I would start out on the Schwinn. I really only want to take it to work and back, about 3 kms up some, you guessed it, killer hills.
