Getting an E bike, but also want upgraded batetery- too many to chose from! help!

OK, i am getting a 24v e bike. ( http://www.amazon.com/Trailz-Electri...6320098&sr=8-1 ) I want an upgraded battery. I dont know much about this stuff though. i was thinking about these 2,

I want to get at least 10 miles on it per charge. the bike itself is 70 pounds, i am about 220. so i am a little bit over the weight limit, but that never stopped people before. now, seeing as i will be pedaling with it a little, i want to find a battery that will last for a decent life time and also keep a charge for over 10 miles(preferably 15 or more). How far do you think these 2 upgraded batteries will last me compared to the stock ones? I have been reading through some of the threads here on the forums but there are so many to chose from that i don't know which one is the right one for me. is it worth spending more on a battery than what I already am about to spend? cuz i am starting to reach the limit i can pay. thanks for any help in advance.

10 miles on a charge, pedaling a little... to me that says you need at a minimum 24V10Ah (10 amp hours) if you go with nimh/nicad, and more if you go with lead.

Something to think about: nicad normally survive more charge/use cycles than nimh or lead. nicad batteries have no problem if you run them down to zero (and are fine if you don't, as well). Unfortunately, with lead batteries if you run them until the battery protection circuit cuts out (0% charge left, essentially) and recharge them right away you can recharge them maybe 100 times - far less than that if you let them sit while they're at 0% charge.

nimh batteries are also better off if you don't run them all the way down, but it's not as big of a deal as with lead.

the one from batteryspace is better quality. Both of the ones you linked to, you need two to get the range you want. (and with the one from batteryspace you'd want to wire them in parallel to make them give enough current).

Check out the NiCad 24v pack at www.ebikes.ca
24V8Ah - should be enough if you pedal a lot, but since it's NiCad don't feel shy about running it down all the way.

so total calculated AH i need is 8.33 for a 10 mile trip. not bad. could be better. ( using 14-20 Wh/km ) aka Power Hungry (either no pedaling, or hauling a load, or going really fast)

edit- how much better is the one from batteryspace from the stock battery on the bike i linked to? would it be worth it to buy this battery instead?

its about the same, except it has double (10,000 mAh total) apposed to the 5000mAh on the previous battery i linked to at batteryspace. im not sure how much more that would help.

where it says "c rate" that means you multiply the number of amp hours by the "c rate" to get the number of amps it's good for. Also notice the price.

and it costs $180 plus shipping. It is a "24V 8Ah NiCad" battery and if you use the browser's "find" function to look for "24V 8Ah NiCad" you will see it. Give the page some time to load because there's a lot of stuff on it.

Oh, and I guess the charger will cost you - $75 or $80 depending on how fast you want to charge.

Although you mention that you are reaching the limit of your budget, I would hold off on these batteries and save bit more for Lifepo4.

I've just did a quick check on Ebay and it looks like 24v 10ah version is going for $250 ($80 shipping) and 24v 15ah for $350 ($88 shipping). The Lifepo4 is much better than ones you listed.

The battery that comes with your bike is enough for 10 miles if you pedal. But for those days when you just don't feel like pedaling much, buy couple of 12v 10ah SLA (from monster scooter) and connect onto your current battery. That will bring your total to 24v 20ah and cheap/fast way to extend the range while you save up for Lifepo4. Oh make sure you buy a durable bag for additional battery.

And, don't worry about not knowing much about connecting these things - Its not that hard and if I could do it, anyone can. There are few threads here that talks about how to do that - so do read those.

Batteries is a whole topic and can be complicated. I would suggest you go with the SLA that comes with it and then see how they work. They are cheap and it is easy to get a second set if you need to. If you ride 10 mph and pedal comfortably, I would guess the SLA battery will work.
Not all 10 AH batteries will work because the C rating is important but so is the charger and even the way the battery is made.

that pingping battery would be great - lots of range and it'll have no problem at all pulling the kind of amps you need. 6 days are left in the auction and the selling price will probably be $350 or $400 (with shipping and charger included) by that time.

As mentioned, try your battery first to see if you can handle the commute. You'll be surprised how miserly you become to conserve the battery (least in the beginning) or are in better shape than you originally thought. I would wait till you know what you need/want (and budget to match) before jumping into higher end battery.

If you want to start playing (I mean increase the range) - get couple of SLA battery (+ bag) and try couple of different combination... 24v 20ah, 36v 10-15ah, etc. Trust me, once you try 36v on Ezip, you don't want 24v again.

Run stock and break the bike in for a while before taking long trips. Things get loose, need adjustement and with the added weight of motor/batteries it's no fun to get stuck miles from nowhere. No hurry on better battery - they're getting better/cheaper as we speak. Learn what's best for your situation because there's a WIDE range of how far an eBike can go on a single charge.

Besides the initial cost the only downside to over-estimating your battery capacity is that you'll have plenty capacity for detours or extremely strong winds, steep hills, heavy loads, etc.

well, i have been selling some of my other stuff and i figure a good battery that will last me 1000+ charges would be a better investment than buying new expensive ones every year. so im bidding on the battery on ebay and i feel the battery is worth the price. I would like a battery that goes beyond my expectations. and i think this battery will do just that. as for the 36v opposed to 24v, i think it would be safer to use the voltage the motor was intended for. i dont really care much about going fast, i just wana go long distances. like from my house to McDonald's xD.
