Upgrading Synergy bike battery

I have been reading that you can run various voltages - 36v, 48v etc. - on a number of the hub kits from Amped, Crystalyte, etc. I have a 5 year old 24v Synergy bike with a chain driven side mount motor that needs a new battery. Does anyone know if I will do any damage to the motor if I put a 36v battery on it? I looked at the motor, but I don't see any markings on it that give me any specs. I don't want to burn out the motor. Anyone familiar with the motors on these bikes?
