I rented the DVD a while back, I liked it. Glad to see GM coming out with the Volt.

Ya know what I think? Actually, what I know, not what I think.

I was doing some research on GM's stock, and considering investing, since it tanked down to $2.60/share, awaiting government bailout. After they recover, it will undoubtedly make investors who get in right now alot of money.

Anyway, I was researching the Volt, and also wondered about the old EV-1 concept they fielded. I was wondering why it was scrapped. I decided to take an unbiased look, even after seeing the movie that royally reemed GM for crushing them.

The reality is, the lease payments the owners were paying were nowhere near what it really cost for those cars. GM was taking massive losses on that particular project, as the technology (mainly battery) simply was not yet developed well enough to even consider for mass production.

As a result, they dropped the project, recalled the cars, and some dimwit had them crushed. Even Bob Lutz admits, that was normally what they do for any failed project, but in that case very bad for publicity.

Either way, the EV-1 was doomed from the get-go. It really was never meant to go into mass production. It was simply a test platform to see how feasible the concept could be for future developement when the technology does evolve. It was never meant for full implemetation.

Now that battery tech is arriving, we now see GM taking the lead to really try and field an electric car. If they can somehow manage to get the price of the Volt down to about $30,000, instead of $40,000, then they'll have something. With lithium battery prices dropping rapidly as oil drops and increased production, I think this may actually become a possibility. However, we won't know until later in 2009.

So, to put it lightly, the makers of the movie were full of cr@p, and didn't know their elbows from their.... well, you get the idea. The whole thing is an ignorant joke made by people who have never run a major corporation, built, tested, and fielded a real product of that magnitude. And, they never really asked GM for a full analysis on why they scrapped it. They just assume it's all some conspiracy by the oil companies, even after GM told them flat out, at the time it was a losing bet. Do the oil companies have influence? Sure, so do consumers who have made it clear they wanted an electric car. But that wasn't the real reason they dropped the project.

It was dropped for the same reason most other concept/research projects get scrapped.... they were losing MONEY.

Oh, and if anyone here is looking to build a LiFePO4 pack anytime soon, let me know. I have found a potential supplier of 3.2v/10ah cells for a decent price. I'm also working on building a custom BMS for a multi-cell pack.

re: lifepo4 10ah cells and do-it-yourself BMS...

I'm interested. I'd like to learn how to put together a BMS and I'm also wondering what's the price for a few of those lifepo4 cells.
