folding ebike wheel problems
Hi,
I reciently purchased a folding ebike (generic chinese model) and am experiencing rear spoke brakage. The bike has single walled rims,13 gauge,36 spokes.I had it repaired at the dealer and broke another spoke riding out of my parking lot.
I am definetly a clydsdale at 280 lbs(working on it)but I would like to continue using it.
I live in montreal and am having a hard time finding any shop to build me a new double walled rim with 12 or 13 gauge spokes.......any suggestions please...!
Thanks,Jan

Is the wheel that's experiencing broken spokes a hub-motor wheel?
I had a good experience over all with this Montreal shop and I bet they can help you:
La Bicycletterie JR, 151 Rue Rachel E
Otherwise, I can also recommend the cooperative at Concordia university:
(info towards the bottom of this page)

---------------
a bike wheel is always stronger if the spokes' tension is adjusted to be high enough and equal enough by a real person (as opposed to a machine) and if the person is not rushing to get through the job.

Hi cerewa, yes it has a large rear hub.
spokes are short, about 105 mm or less.
Thanks for the lead on the bike store.

update on spoke breakage
Ok so I went to the recomended bike store in montreal and found out my electric hub is drilled for 12 gauge spokes(the bike came with 13 gauge). All the spokes broke at the elbow in the flange, all 4 of them.
I did notice that a replacement 13 gauge spoke just flopped around in the hub.
I spent a day trying to track down 12 gauge spokes cut short for my 20" wheel.
I had no problem with locating a double walled rim. The owner of the bike store where i bought the bike told me that I could only get a double walled rim from him and that all his folding ebikes has 13 gauge spokes.I then noticed that the 2009 models in his showroom all had 12 gauge spokes. I really hate people who lie.Despite the fact that the bike is only a month old he doesn't seem to want to do anything for me.
I am still trying to find the 12 gauge spokes
anyone have any ideas? thanks ,Jan

You are obviously much more patient than I am. If I found out that that store owner had lied to me then I'd of returned the bike immediately & gotten my money back & if they try to refuse, there are formal channels to go through & make him wish he had not been so difficult.

ebike problems
I am not patient, just diplomatic.I have also been on the pedelec forums about the rear hub having only 2 wires. Is it possible that the motor is brushed?
The bike was sold to me as being brushless and I assumed the controller was in the hub. I know that brushless is 3 phase and there are no controllers anywhere on the bike.
Thanks, Jan

fed up
Ok here is where I stand,
I have decide to take all the electrics off my folding bike and put them on my mountain bike.It is a norco 2004 wolverine and basically bullit proof.
The store where I bought the bike is willing to give me a controller and throttle at cost.I realize that the 250 watt motor with 26" wheels is going to give me less hill climbing ability but more speed.
The only problem I foresee is that I cannot use the autocutoff brake levers.
I have found a regular 20" bike wheel that I can replace the rear wheel on my folding bike for about 20$with a 6 speed freewheeel althought I might need a wider axle.
Is this a good Idea**********????
thanks ,Jan
