Province introduces new e-bike laws

By tbnewswatch staff

Ontario is adopting new safety requirements for electronic bikes.

E-bikes can share road space with cars, pedestrians and other traffic throughout Ontario. Many of the bikes can reach speeds that exceed 30 kilometres per hour.

Some new requirements will take affect Saturday. The new rules will limit the maximum weight of an e-bike to 120 kilograms, braking distance of nine metres, and not allow modifications to the bike’s motor that would allow it t o travel above 32 kilometres per hour.

In August, Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to a report of an e-bike crash near Dease Street. The man crashed his bike and was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

He was later charged with impaired driving.

Also included in the e-bike rule changes, drivers must be 16 years old and be wearing approved bicycle or motorcycle helmets. Riders must also follow the same traffic laws as cyclists.

Municipalities will be able to decide where e-bikes can be used on their streets, bike lanes and trails.
