Trek/Bionx Motor Shorted

The motor on my new Trek Valencia+ shorted out 3 weeks ago. Symptoms were simple. I turned on the bike, took a single pedal stroke, and it went stone-dead. Motor locked into resistive mode. It also blew the fuse in the battery, so the battery wasn't recognized by the charger, etc. Took it back to the bike shop, they first tried a battery from a floor model, it blew that fuse as well. They called Trek, and were told immediately that the motor had failed, the key symptom being it locked into resistive mode.

Anyway, bike has been in the shop for 3 weeks, the batteries (both) got land-shipped back to Trek? Bionx? to replace the fuses. In the meantime, a spare motor has been ordered, but no word from Trek? Bionx? when it may be available. I read on another forum that getting a replacement motor from Bionx was a long wait, on the order of 6 months. Sure hope that's not the case for my repair.

So, reporting this problem FYI. Anyone else have a similar issue?

(side note: I broke my foot recently. I bike commute to work, and the lack of the e-bike has seriously cramped my mobility. My situation is admittedly unique; couldn't have had a worse time to lose the ebike)

wow, that really stinks. Keep us updated on how this progresses for you. I love my FX+, but they really do need to get these supply problems fixed. It may just be because the bikes are so new & the dealers (and trek) haven't sold a lot of them, but the wait time for replacement stuff seems to take forever.

My BionX motor did the same thing this past dec. Although I was riding it in mid-winter conditions in -20C commuting to work at the time. So I expected something might go wrong.

It took around 6 months to get my system back. I didn't put any pressure on my dealer, as I have numerous other bikes to ride. Although just the one ebike. I had also purchased a new motorcycle in the spring so it was my new toy to play with.

The unit was sent back in late December and I got it back in early June. They replaced the rear wheel with a brand new one. New batteries in the old case. All under warranty.

Just my experience. Hopefully you don't have to wait long.

It took 18 days to get a set of spokes for my Valencia+. There is also a long backorder on chargers. I ordered a second one back in March and got an email that it had arrived. I went to pick it up and all they could find was the cord. They hunted around and "found" it, but in May they asked if I could return it to them because mine actually hadn't arrived from Trek, just the cord came in. They accidently gave me one that was meant for another bike, so of course they couldn't sell the bike. I gave it back and have been waiting since then.

I bent the battery connector early on and my shop fixed it, but was supposed to replace it whenever the new one came in. That hasn't arrived yet either. It's only been three months.

But I haven't heard of a motor shorting out before. That really stinks. I would not allow a six month wait though. I would ask for a deadline for the motor or money back.

It took me around a month to get a backup charger. I also had a charger that went bad and they replaced it on spot. I broke a spoke and it was fixed the same day. I am not sure if your LBS is spending the time needed with Trek to speed things up. I know my LBS is very commited to the Trek Ride+ and has even given me a loaner Valencia+ for four days until my FX+ was repaired.

On a side note I did go to your LBS store. My wife was convinced I would get better service from another LBS store she visited with me. Luckily I listened to her.

Names! Mine is Brickwell and maybe you're referring to Bicycle Habitat? I've used Brickwell for a long time, and it's reasonably near me. BH is a pain for me to get to, though closer to my job. Still, in Brickwell's defense, they weren't happy with the way the wheel was made and wanted a whole set of spokes to redo the wheel. They didn't want to redo it with the same spokes. I also was emailing Trek during this and they said that no one is getting chargers because they're not getting them. I called BH to see if they had any and they didn't.

I may hit BH today during lunch. Transportation Alternatives has them selling a Kryptonite Chain for $54 and if I'm ever going to leave this outside for even an hour or two then I need a good chain.

Make sure that your dealer is ordering the charger directly through their Trek Rep & not through the normal channels. I emailed trek to find out about getting an extra charger & that is what customer service told me. I had my local trek dealer (at the time not a ride + dealer) order it that way in Mid-april & I had mine a week later. The chargers that Trek has in stock are all allocated (or were at the time), so the reps must have some other way of acquiring them.

Mine is Bicycle Habitat and I did go into Brickwell. I did find them to be very nice and professional. However, I found Bicycle Habitat more committed to getting into the Trek electric side of the business. MK313 might have a point that they should be going through their Trek rep. Bicycle Habitat might sell more bikes and have a better relationship with Trek? Unfortunately since you did not buy the bike there I do not think they will go out of their way to expedite getting you a 2nd charger. If you do go in ask for Matt he is the store manager. He is the one leading the electric side of the business.

Good Luck!

Quick followup. Had a call from the bike shop today, bike has been repaired and was ready for pickup. Retrieved it late today, all seems well. About 4 weeks for get the parts, turns out the shipping of the battery was the slowest step. Bike shop had to wait for a special shipping box first, then send it out. Guess is goes ground-only due to shipping regulations.
