The Copenhagen Wheel
Has anyone seen this already?

Smart, responsive and elegant, the Copenhagen Wheel is a new emblem
for urban mobility. It transforms ordinary bicycles quickly into hybrid e-bikes that also
function as mobile sensing units. The Copenhagen Wheel allows you to capture
the energy dissipated while cycling and braking and save it for when you need
a bit of a boost. It also maps pollution levels, traffic congestion,
and road conditions in real-time.

A little late to the party, but I just read about this today. The part that I'm not clear on...will your bike **need** an iPhone (or other smartphone) to utilize the wheel? Or is it just an added feature to the wheel that is optional for it's use? I can imagine this thing being a huge advance in that no more bulky battery packs to mount, no more wires that have to be run, etc. Of course there still has been no mention made of price anywhere that I have seen on the web.

$600ish they say. Still working on other prototypes. look on their facebook page.

Cute idea, but given current technologies, the return on the cycling and braking to get any kind decent range is just not there.

Best case scenario is you would get 10% return.. So figure, you would have to pedal for 100 miles to get 10 miles of no pedaling range.

Not really practical.

It's just like having an iPad.... Great in theory, but other technologies (iPhone) already do the same thing but with greater efficiency and smaller size. "Look at me I spent $650 on an iPad, that really is just an iPhone that I can't make phone calls with, but it looks cool" kinda thing.

I'm guessing the main use is for travel logging with an added benefit of getting some energy back.

i have a feeling that wheel will weight quite a bit, since everything is packed inside the hub

my current BionX just the hub wheel weights quite a bit already without the battery... i can't imagine how the Copenhagen wheel can be any lighter with all the extra electronics packed inside

It failed in a Demo in Salem, MA this past summer, but the technology certainly seems creative.
