So, how do I project range with an E-Bike?

The platform will be a Sun EZ3 trike

16" front drive hub motor, 48v 500w
48v, 30aH battery pack from Ping
Loaded riding weight up to 350 pounds, including touring gear.

goal no pedal range between charges: 130+ miles

Doable?

You would probably get about 30 miles if you went slowly on a flat route. Maybe...

My guess is 50 miles on flat roads, doing 20mph

You aren't going to get 130 miles from a 30ah battery unless it's on a recumbent bicycle with no additional weight and are pedaling for most of the time doing 15mph..

To get 130 miles no pedaling will take a 60ah+ battery and only do 15mph on a rear motor setup or through the gears..

Cool. The 130 figure was from a place called Phoenix Motors, and I wanted to get some real world input on this. Can anyone fill me oin on the necessary equations to compute the potential miles, though? If I'm going to drop a couple thousand or more on an extremely high aH rated battery pack, I'd like to be able to confirm their numbers. I've also decided on the Electro E-4 middrive kit.

I'll also be building up a smaller system for my touring bike to assist me, by the way on a 700c hub motor. The trike is for my wife, and since I've developed cardiac issues, this may be the only way we can continue touring, etc. It'll be mainly to assist me on hills as a force multiplier so I can keep my HR down. I have Atrial Fibrillation issues and arrhythmia.

I always figure one amp/hour per mile with no pedaling. I have dealt with Phoenix motors and wouldn't believe a thing he says or buy his products. Ecospeed has a chart on their website (or used to anyway) to figure mileage. You might also try endless sphere for more technical info. I have put on a number of the E-4 kits on recumbents, they will go up my steep practice hill (20%) with strong pedaling. I have some extras laying around...

On a recumbent, figure 18wh/mile..
On a regular bike figure 25wh/mile..
This is only doing 15mph AND pedaling on FLAT roads with no wind..

48v 30ah is 1440WH
So for a recumbent that's 80 miles given the above stipulations..
So for a regular bike that's 58 miles " "

Real world figures (winds, hilly, etc) are usually 50% difference at 15mph and 100% difference at 20mph..

You can do the calculations from there...

Hi,

P.S. With regard to range, I have a 20 Ah Li-ion on my Rans Stratus Recumbent, 36 volt 350 watt. I figure 20 miles at 20 mph without peddling. Any peddling I do adds to the mileage.

I've been able to go 50 miles with no trouble as long as I pedal all the time.

Were you successful in your EZ-3 conversion? I just got the aluminum EX-3 AX which has three disc brakes and was wondering the best way to electrify it for my wife. Please let me know how your turned out, what you would do differently next time and any recommendations you might have.
I'm curious as to which type and brand you used.

My front wheel is 20."

Thanks,

-Jim
