    Do I need a steel fork, what kit should I get?

    I have a 2008 Marin Mount Vision Pro 15.5" and am wondering what ebike kit I should get for it. Do take notice of the fork and bike materials in the link...

    I first thought that I wanted a front hub motor kit, but then I heard that the materials the bike are made of could cause the fork to break, even with steel torque arms installed, just not a good idea, as I was thinking that I wanted at least 1,000 Watt @ 48v... That would get me to 30+ mph, right? You think even 35 mph?

    Now, I'm thinking that I should just go with a rear hub kit, but would the bike materials not be an issue then too? I guess just not as dangerous if/when it brakes, yikes, I don't want that to happen, should I just get a steel fork for the front hub kit? Do they make steel forks with suspension, like the one found on my bike?




    Ideally, I'd want some sort of governor switch, to keep the bike within a programmable speed. Also, torque sensitive pedal assist is good, right? Can you suggest a kit and what to do with the bike?

    Mef1975, tell us a little about what you plan on using your e-bike for?
    Will you just be commuting? If so, how far and over what terrain? Flat roads or hilly roads?
    How often do you plan on riding?
    Do you want a replacement for your gas powered car? What distances do you want to travel?

    The 2008 Marin Mount Vision Pro is a nice bike but it's one purpose is to be a great downhill MTB. If I were in your shoes I would sell the Marin Mount Vision Pro and purchase a good hardtail mountain bike with the option to use a rear rack for battery storage such as a Kona, Cannondale, etc. Use the money you get from the sale of the Marin to purchase the hardtail and also purchase the 48v 1000w kit. Make sure the new bike has disk brakes front and rear.

    Purchase a rear hub motor kit such as my favorite the 48v 1000w Papamotor Kit and read the last ten pages of this thread: Anyone heard of or purchased Papamotor electric conversion kits?

    Use whatever money you have left from the Marin sale to upgrade your rims and tires and purchase a Cycle Analyst. Also read through ebikes.ca website.

    If your commute is over hilly terrain then you may want to consider a mid-drive setup.

    I'm riding all over, on and off road, haven't driven a car in years. I prefer not to sell my bike, and think it will serve well once I address the issue with the materials and torque in a system that could get me to 35+mph, it's just that I'm having a hard time finding a system that will do what I want, as everyone is trying to set me up to go 20 or 25 mph, which is basically useless to me, especially when off road.

    Kinda freaked me out when the guys at ebike .ca said that I could put a Crysatlyte H3540 motor kit at 48V on a fork made of aluminum/magnesium, as long as it has the steel torque arms, is this really true? I thought I'd need a fork made of steel, titanium, or at least a really high grade aluminum, 7 something. Anyhow, can direct drive motors have pedal assist, torque sensitive?

    I agree with 350htrr; if you want to go 35+ mph on or off road you'll need to have something like what Hi-Power Cycles sells and be prepared to spend extra money.

    I'm curious to know if you've gone 35+ mph on your current Marin Mount Vision Pro on and off road?

    The other concern is how far do you plan on traveling at 35+ mph? The amount of batteries and their weight will set you back if you plan on going anything more than 20 miles. In addition, the stress on all the components will be that much greater.

    I've hit 36+ mph on my bike but I don't see how I could do that off road. I would certainly make sure my health insurance was up-to-date and that I had full coverage.

    The faster you go the less time you have to react to what's on the road and off road a little twig or bump will send you flying...literally.

    You might consider mid-drive (look at BBS02) for off road use if the terrain is gnarly. Also try to ride a front hub conversion before considering that option. PERSONALLY I didn't like the feeling of being pulled along; the ramifications of a frontal problem scare me. I was impressed by the several rear hub drives that I rode, but wasn't able to try them off road.
