I saw a thing on MSNBC where they set up bait bikes for would be theives - and then were able to track their stolen bikes on a google maps type map. Spiffy. I want to know how I can do this for my bikes. I have a plan for it.

It looks like it is possible, though probably more expensive than you would want because it is a subscription service, much like a cell phone.

Nero Global Tracking https://www.neroglobal.com/news_gps_t...tolen_bike.php says it can be done, but it may not be cost-effective at $30 per month for a service subscription.

Pegtech https://www.pegtech.com has a system, but has no prices listed which implies "If you need to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it."

Meanwhile, as I searched for info on the Internet, I found some humorous bait-bike news

Having been used to catch three bike thieves during its test period, the bike was lost on June 7, the police said on Thursday, and is probably in the Waal river. When the bike showed it was moving, the control room monitoring it notified the police, but it disappeared off the radar while on the river bank. Police dredged the section of the Waal without retrieving the bike."

Awesome. I'm designing a system to rent bikes that I'm going to outfit with some theft-'proof' equipment and would rather that I could track it while it was out on rent in case someone tries to remove it from the city, for example.

So let me see if this works. You lock the bike up securing the front and back wheel then you tie fido to the downtube and give s/he the command to guard. Am I right on this? I don't think anyone is going to mess with your bike if you're gone for 10mins or more. Probably have a lonely fido tho.

I actually want it so people can find the rentals as the system I'm going to set up may depend on that.
