    Helmet Light using alkalines

    I'm looking to put a light on my helmet to light up the "cockpit" and provide some additional "be seen" lighting. I would like something that will use AA's or AAA's. I already have headlight and taillights for the bike, but would like something to view my computer and/or map. Any recommendations?

    I have a small LED flashlight with a chain ring that I used to attach to my winter jacket zipper for on demand cockpit lighting to see my computer. I do not ride at night in the summer but I suppose you could attach it to a jersey zipper without it bothering you too much or put it in a jersey pocket.

    You obviously have missed the voluminous discussion about Fenix flashlights recently. Do a search in this section using Fenix-titles only and you will see much discussion of this option. Here is my recent thread after I joined the bandwagon. I am going out tonight with my new Duracell 2650's and am hoping for longer intervals between battery change or no battery change. Since it is the first time to use these batteries it may take a couple more charges to reach full capacity.

    Princeton Tec Eos Bike. Good backup light and all-round use light. Bombproof, and best feature is its regulated LED. The light will not lose brightness as the batteries weaken.
    Every time we let a vehicle pass there is a little bit of compromise. But compromise allows the city to function and allows cyclists to function in the city. The trick is not to eliminate compromise but to learn how to work safely within it.

    Don't you think a Fenix L2D would be a bit of overkill to light up a map or cyclocomputer?
    Every time we let a vehicle pass there is a little bit of compromise. But compromise allows the city to function and allows cyclists to function in the city. The trick is not to eliminate compromise but to learn how to work safely within it.

    Obviously.

    But didn't he also say additional "be seen" lighting using AA's or AAA's?

    Plus you can use it for a flashlight.

    PT EOS would be a good choice and less expensive and has different utility than a flashlight. I considered a headlamp also instead of the Fenix. Depends on whether you camp or not or other needs, budget, etc.

    Have one and it is perfect for reading computer, backup light for fixing flats, and reading signs. Uses 3 AAA batteries.

    How secure is the helmet mount for the Princeton Tec Eos?

    How are the Fenix L2D's being helmet mounted? Velcro straps? I went back and read a few threads, but the only one I saw was mounted with rubber bands and I would prefer something else.

    The headlamps that I have seen used simply wrap the headband around the helmet. I am not sure about other mounts for those. Maybe someone can chime in.

    Fenix-store.com has bikeblocks and fishblocks that are appropriate depending upon the vent alignment in your helmet.

    The Zefal Doodad Plus is preferred by some for it's lower profile. I have the bikeblock and Doodad. For my Bell Sweep R I preferred the bikeblock because it compressed down and contoured around my helmet perfectly. I use the Doodad for my mini-pump.

    K2 LED head light, River Rock designs

    cheap and and you can find it at your local Target.

    I have it. It would do the job perfect and it also comes with a rear red blink-e light on the battery pack. Give it a shot, don't like it....return it.

    I got it to run on the helmet and have my 200ls on the bars, but somehow I ended up with 3 200ls so I am not going to need it. I used it for a few test rides and it plain works.

    Planet Bike Sport Spot

    Runs on 3 AAA cells. Has a handlebar mount and a helmet/headband style mount with two sizes of velcro straps. Can be run in spot, flood, combo and flashing modes. Gives plenty of light to light up cockpit, be used to aim at cars approaching on side streets, etc. Not anywhere near bright enough for a stand alone light. I am very pleased with mine.

    Here's another vote for the Planet Bike SPort Spot. It would be ideal if you're only looking to light up the cockpit (to read your computer, etc.) and get cars' attention. I rode with mine helmet mounted for a while, and it let me avoid using the backlight on my Garmin Edge.

    But if you want something to light up the cockpit AND aid you a little bit in seeing the road (obviously to be used in addition with a more powerful handlebar mounted light) then I think the Planet Bike Blaze is a good choice. It is bright enough to help see around corners and also has a long throw for seeing pretty far down the road. I recently replaced the Sport Spot with the Blaze on my helmet and am pretty happy with it. Both lights have long run times with batteries. The Blaze uses 2 AAs.

    It's very secure. There is a flat plastic piece that sits on the helmet and a short velcro strap that goes through the vents on the helmet. It won't fall off. It also tilts up and down depending if you want to view the computer, or down the road to read street signs or such.

    The L1D would be a good choice.. It has a choice of modes, runs on a single aa battery.. The low mode if more than enough for seeing a map or being seen.. If you just want to be seen, running in sos mode is a good choice.. You can use a bikeblock for mounting on your helmet, which is also available from the fenix store..

    I have 2 helmet-mountable lights (plus a helmet mount for a Dinotte 200L I have yet to try). One is a Cateye EL410, it runs off AAA batteries, claims to be watreproof, and is easily attached to a helmet through the vents or on handlebars. Lightweight, reasonably bright for being seen, and has a steady or rapid flash mode (good for getting a driver's attention). The other light is a LED headlamp I bought a few years ago at REI. The PlanetBike light mentioned above is the same idea. It doesn't cast as bright a spot as the Cateye, but has 3 intensity levels plus a flash mode. I mounted it to my helmet with the strap, then secured the strap with zip ties. I clip a PlanetBike SuperFlash to the strap at the back of the helmet.

    I really need to ask someone how I look in this get-up!

    The ultimate in lightweight and size would be one of the tiny watch-battery-size LED lights. Attach (velcro?) to top of helmet. Too small for anything other than illuminating the cockpit and maybe as a flasher, but cheap and I doubt you'd feel it's there.

    If all you're interested in is lighting your cockpit, there is a pretty nice rayovac headlight I bought at Lowe's for like $13 that has 2 red LED's, or 1 white LED, or a xenon light that works pretty well. I mainly use it just like you, to read the comp and have a little light for looking to the side. I'll probably upgrade to one of those fenix l2d's soon anyway, but for now the cheapie works fine and gets 200 hours on the LED with 3 AAA batteries.

    I'm using a 3 watt MagLite on my helmet held on with a couple of zip ties. I don't know about some of the other lights mentioned, but the Maglite's beam is adjustable from flood to spot, and really puts out a pretty good light. It could get you home if your main light went bad. Got it at Wal-mart for $19 and uses 2 AA batteries

    Yes I have. I'm going to try the Princeton Tec EOS. I'm hoping that it will fill my needs. I'll post a review of the EOS, in this forum, after I receive it and have a chance to test it out.

    Thanks to all that have added their input! I gave all ideas consideration, and I think any/all of the lights recommended would probably have fit my needs.

    My limited night riding is mostly on well lit suburban streets and MUP's, but I would like to try some Brevets in the future. My current lighting is twin Cateye EL-530's & twin Planet Bike Superflash's.

    Received the Princeton Tec EOS tonight. Mine is solid black. Appears to be very well constructed. It's too cold for me to test it out on a ride tonight, but I think that it will serve its purpose well. The helmet mount is quite secure and it mounts and dismounts quickly. I like the ability to swivel the beam up or down. It is quite bright for such a small and inexpensive light. I purchased it off ebay for under $32 shipped. It appears that even in low output mode it will be adequate for lighting the computer, and at medium or high output it looks like it should help out with both "see" and "be seen" visibility.

    Excellent! Give us a review soon. I have a Petzl Tikka XP which is similar to the EOS, but no regulated LED. I would like to see what the difference would be. No biggie, but it's good to have. I use it for exactly what you do, and it's been fine.

    I did mod my PT EOS, just replacing the LED with a Seoul P4, and I can tell you it is worth the hassle. It is a great lamp. More info on modding the EOS here:

    That's very interesting. What percentage of increase in light output would you estimate? Any additional tips on this modification?

    Light output increase is hard to estimate or to measure. I have read something about 50% more.
    In my case, only switching the LED and not the optics, the output changes dramatically because the Seoul LEDs have a different height than the standard Luxeons. Originally the lamp produces a very bright spot in the center with some circular spill of moderate brightness around it. With the Seoul LED and stock optics I am getting a pretty homogeneous illumination of a wider angle than before. Overall much more spill but still good enough to ride fast in the night on the road with it as a single lamp. I prefer this type of illumination - if you would want a similar type than the original (obviously stronger) you might need to try the lenses discussed in the candlepowerforums thread.

    The important thing is that the runtime of the lights does not decrease. The new LEDs are just 5 or 6 dollars now at kaidomain or dealextreme.
