Garmin Edge 705 successor rumors/plans/info?
The Garmin Edge series so far has a 2-year product cycle.
Edge 305 - release August 31, 2005
Edge 705 - release August 29, 2007
New Edge - release August 2009?
Are there rumors, info, talks of a successor? I have the 305 and am thinking of getting the 705, but I want to know what's on the horizon.
I searched 705 rumors and didn't find anything.

Exactly... but I'm curious to see what kind of upgrades they may offer (customizable fonts? bigger screen?) and if they are planning on releasing something this year or not.
I'd imagine there will be a latte dispensing accessory.

I would be happy if someone else (Polar?) became a competitor.
Garmin has had no competition in the HRM/GPS/Bicycle market.
The only Garmin product that I will ever own is my Garmin Edge 305. I'm on my 4th one. Replacements covered by the warranty, only to have them fail again. Sure they have great customer service, but I would rather have reliability.
I'll stop here... don't let me get started on the mount or the glued together case or the lame TC software.

Because the case is glued you can't take it apart to see how it works.
The TC software is Training Center that came with the unit. It is not the best but there is always one better. I hear that SportTracks is about the best for a PC but I don't like because it is not user friendly.

Case: the two halves are used to apply pressure to the battery spring connection. The glue fatigues under normal ride conditions and the unit shuts down. It is my understanding that Garmin corrected this on the Edge 705 by using screws, but I have no intention of spending $500 to find out.
TC: Training Center. This software is necessary to upload and download data files and while there are other, better software that you can get, you still have to use TC to talk to the device.
I love and hate my Garmin Edge 305. I wished for a competitor because that would force Garmin out of their complacency. Perhaps no one could do it better, but I would love to see another choice.

Nope, still losing rides or laps from rides as of FW 2.70 and 2.80. Typical symptom is they will show up in the Unit's history, but cannot be uploaded to the PC as a TCX file. Often a chkdsk of the media will indicate that the files are corrupt. Only thing that will straighten it out is a hard reset and then the rides are lost permanently as they were never converted to TCX from the laps data.
As a SW developer, I can say that file corruption on an embedded system is just plane sloppy, inexcusable work. It's like shooting yourself in the foot, nobody to blame but your own stupidity.

Still, I agree that the problem of file corruption gives a very poor impression and it is unacceptable to make the consumer jump through such ridiculous hoops to save and analyze their data. After these two experiences, I chose to revert back to version 2.6 and will hold out on the new 2.8 until others report consistent, good experiences.

I do not believe that there is a new productin the pipe. If there were, the Garmin-SlipStream team would be riding with it, and all of the riders still have Edge 705s on their bikes.

I used a 205 for 3 years, wore the thing out. I used it for my runs and my rides. When I run I have a pouch strapped to my arm that I keep it in. Then got a 305... used the same way, never ever an issue. Never broke a mount. Recently I was surprised by being given a garmin 705. Pretty nifty, but only have had a chance to try it out once so far. So for this girl, garmin has done good.

With Garmin using Google's new Android OS/Platform for a new phone and their new handheld, I wonder if an Android-powered cycling computer is in the works. That'd be pretty awesome for us tinkerers. I don't own a 305 or a 705, but can anyone tell me whether it runs Windows or Linux? If the latter, we will probably see an Android version!
@rodrigaj, I definitely agree. I'd love to see some competition in this market. If the powermeters, cadence and wheelspeed sensors used bluetooth, most mobile phones could plug in nicely as cycling computers. And since I bring mine on rides for emergencies anyway, it'd save weight.

I have both a Forerunner 405 and Edge 705. While they are great, they are already looking primitive compared to what is possible.
The moment someone comes out with a Ant+Sport attachment for the iPhone/iPod Touch and appropriate software, I'll move off of the Garmin stuff.

They also need to make a good cycle mount and a screen that will work well in sunlight for the iPhone.
For the new Edge 805 (the name makes sense), They should use a better algorithm for calorie count like the 405cx. The 705 does not use heart rate information for the math.

Garmin is offering a $50 rebate on the 705 (good through April 30) this may indicate they are trying to close out the 705

New Edge - release August 2010?
I wonder what goodies they'll have. Hopefully it's really is new and not a small improvement. As in a lot thinner, lighter, etc.
