    Where to better mount lights: helmet or handle bars?

    It's starting to get darker earlier around here and I started doing some research on what lights to get for my commuting. I decided that I want something with a rechargeable battery. However, before I decide on a specific light, I started thinking where I want hang the lights. Itís seems to me that mounting lights on the helmet would make it easier to recharge the battery since I wonít need to unmount anything, just bring the helmet with the mounted lights to the charger and recharge. However, having lights on the handle bars seems like a more solid setup.

    Anybody have any suggestions/thoughts?

    Both. But if you have to choose, do the helmet. You aim it where you want to go, not where the bike is going. Being able to see into the corner is a huge benefit. Being able to flash the light into the eyes of a bonehead who is pulling out in front of you at a stop sign is just gravy

    I say both, too (if you have the available funds to do both). If you've already got something in mind for your handlebar light, you might want to consider a small but powerful flashlight (a CR123A or 2xAA version) as a helmet light...then you can use the helmet light as a flashlight when you need one. A few folks really like the more compact Fenix lights as helmet lights (the CR123A versions being small and powerful). I use a 2xAA Fenix on my helmet (an L2D), like the two on my handlebar, so all three use the same batteries and all are interchangeable in function, but the L2D makes for a pretty long helmet light (to some). Mine is not an overly powerful setup, but it's three lights at roughly 180 lumens each, and it does the job for the riding I do, which tends to run to the more tame side in terms of speed.

    Having been on a paved trail here that has taken quite a bit of soaking over the months of heavy rain fall I can back up what Cyccommute is saying about the helmet light thing. Some of the edging of the paved trails fell off into the revine stream and some minor asphalt cracking on the ground. Why do I mention this? It's because it was on a corner bend turn. I ride with both bar/helmet lights (main lights are DIY with commercial units for BE-SEEN) if I did not have the helmet light then while going into the corner I would have missed those cracks coming up very fast on me. It is true if the light is on the bar it only goes where the bike goes thus why a helmet light aids in cornering and seeing around you. Also if riding on the road a helmet light (I've done my own experienting before of this) cars about to make a turn will notice and stop (95% in my case) if they see me with my helmet light looking at them with the light hitting the drivers head. When I didn't have the helmet light (or it's off) drivers at 4 way stops and at the lights most rush the turn thinking you didn't see them (the car).

    If you do need to get only one light get the helmet light tho a bar/helmet light work together for each leans on the other.

    +1000 on helmet mount as first option, then add handlebar light if needed.

    I don't think I offered my one choice, either. If I were FORCED (by circumstance or choice) to have only one light, it would be on the helmet. But I almost always have both running as my most preferred setup.

    I"m doing bar mounted right now, but only for the reason that it makes me feel like slightly less of a dork.

    Mounting the light on the helmet also lets you get off your bike and bring the light with you which is great. It's best to use both handlebar and helmet lights like a some of the others suggested.
