    Unprecedented times?

I only got into commuting last year and am amazed at how affordable and powerful these LED flashlights are becoming. Is this a new phenomena or have LED flashlights been around for ages? It certainly has transformed my ability to commute at any time of the day and make it a serious lifestyle as opposed to a hobby..

LED lights have been around for a while, it's just the powerful ones really took their merry time after 'white' was introduced.
"white" as in blue LED, which were the hot stuff at the time, but with a coating of phosphors to make red and green out of blue, ending up with white... LED.

there's still a lot of potential left in LEDs, but the main problem is the heat they produce and the optimum operating temperature efficiency on prolonged run times.
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)
