Question Garmin GPSMap question

I have a Garmin GPSMap 76CSX on my bike. I have noticed that my unit's auto routing exhibits some strange behavior. Here is the scenario:

#1 - Create a looped route with numerous VIA points using Garmin Mapsource.
#2 - Download the route to the unit.
#3 - On the unit, I select the route that I just downloaded and select "Navigate"
#4 - The GPS performs the route calculations and I am presented with turn by turn directions identical to the route generated in MapSource.
#5 - I am riding along, and decide that I want to divert slightly off course to the nearest Quickie Mart.
#6 - Because I went off the original route, the unit recalculates a new route.
#7 - The newly calculated route takes me from my current position to the end point, but it IGNORES all of the via points that where setup in the original route.
#8 - If I try stop and start the route navigation again, it tries to navigate me back to start of the route instead of continuing from the nearest via point.

Is this is a bug?
Is there a workaround?
Is it possible to resume a programmed route once you have already navigated a number of the via points?
I have tried to post a support question on the Garmin site 4 different times, but the website was not working correctly.

I don't have the same exact model as you - I run a Garmin eTrex Vista HCX - but I followed this tutorial: https://thedailyrandonneur.wordpress....rain-your-gps/ with good results. I think the setting you're looking for on your GPS will be something like:

"Off Route Recalculation: Prompted (otherwise, when you miss a turn, it just recalculates without saying anything..."

On my GPS, this is under the Routing config - with "Prompted" turned on, it won't auto-recalculate - it will ask you if you want it to recalculate, which you can reject. Hopefully you have a similar setting on your GPS.

I wonder if this occurs on Garmin's other models that have auto-routing? I would be interested to hear from other people on the list. To repeat the issue all one has to do is create a "loop/loop like" route with multiple via ponts. Calculate the route the first time, observe the distance, recalculate again, observe if distance changed and via points are included in the recalculated route.

BTW, excellent article. I have contacted Garmin twice now once by phone and once by e-mail. On both occasions no solution or explanation was offered, the are supposed to get back to me.

I will post their feedback if they offer a solution.

For the time being, I am just going to set "Off Route Recalculation" to off, and keep a cue sheet handy in case I ever have to stop navigating the route after the initial calculation.

Attached is the e-mail thread between me and Garmin on this problem (Thread is in bottom up reading order). Garmin did not offer a solution, and after speaking with the rep on the phone, I realized that the GPSMap 76CSX is not the only model that may exhibit this behavior.

>> Unfortunately, I have not found a way to keep the unit from recalculating to the last point. You can keep the unit from recalculating by turning the recalculation feature to Off or Prompted. To do this.

>>
>> The unit is basically using math instead of logic to recalculate the route. The confusion is what causes the unit to recalculate you to the final destination instead of the next via point in your route. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
