How do I get my bike computer thing to work?

I bought a bike and it came with the small computer device for tracking speed but when I ride it doesnt show my speed. What do I do to get it working again? I dont have any instructions with it.

Change the battery.
Make sure the wheel magnet is very close to the receiver when is passes by.

Did you buy it at a bike shop, or used? If you bought it retail, go have them figure it out and show you.
