Keep track of my riding
Hi I started bikeing 3 months ago, and my condition is quite ok, now. I like to track my results somehow, but i don't like to put them manually in the excel.
I heard about Garmin, and also about GPS phones. GPS phones sre more usable for other things also. Do anyone have experiance with some applications for this.

Downloadable Polar Computers
Sigma Rox 8.0/9.0
Garmin 205/305/605/705
GPS phones are hit or miss. You may kill your battery during the ride and you won't get all of the ride. And if you really need to use the phone, you battery maybe dead. I tried using iMapmyride on my iPhone but got about 3hrs before the battery died.
Lots of options. However easiest and cheapest is to just log down in excel or a simple paper/pencil log book

I've had good experience with BimActive. It doesn't work on all GPS capable phones though. For battery life, I get the extended battery and I get > 6 hours. I haven't every drained it from riding unless it was at 2 bars of battery to begin with.

Hi there,
I had the chance to use Garmin 305 on couple of occasions, and I can tell you it’s not the best choice. Not always give you the correct information especially about the position and the height. Also it’s a bit complicated with transferring the data to the pc, sometimes it gives me some errors and I can’t transfer the data at all.

I have had a 305 for a couple of years now and it has worked pretty flawlessly the whole time. Now some have had a switch or battery problem after a couple of years, but not me. I don't know why you had problem transferring data. It is really simple install the software, go for a ride with the 305, plug the usb cable in and it uploads the data. I have never had a problem with that part. If you use a MAC though I guess the software doesn't work for them.

Hi guys, i found a solution, just found out about this application, looks very promising.
Works on mobile phone that has a GPS, i have an Xperia X1 and works perfect. Very clean design. It is very simple for installing, registering and using, one button press for every functionality. Except main stats screen where time, distance, speed, average speed and calories burned there is another screen with actual track. It's free and the web site www.sportypal.com is very functional. Has anybody else already use it?

Thank you all,
I bought Android G1 not just for riding, and choose Sportypal. Here is my ride from yesterday:
https://www.sportypal.com/Public/Workout?workout_id=3092
It was really easy, notting to conect, one click to install, easy to register, more easy to upload.
Every wokout is on the web I can see info and stats, even if I'm outside or on vacation. I can share it also on a facebook too......great

I use my iPhone and the free Trailguru App to track rides up to 4 hours with a fully charged battery. To get extra battery life (since the App requires that the screen remain on) I dim the brightness setting as much as possible. I've never run out of battery on a ride, but I've also never ridden for more than 3.5 hours. I've been very happy with the way it has performed - time, distance, speed, average speed, calories burned - though I don't feel the total elevation can be relied upon.

I use my windows mobile phone for this. But, if you want something cheap and easy I have a spare device you could have for fairly cheap.
It an iblue 757 solar gps bluetooth data logger. It will track where ya go, is rechargeable and has a small solar panel thing to help charge on the go if you like as well. If you want to see its stats just bang that model into ebay and you will see specs and going prices.
Id take 30USD for it. It just sits in a drawer so what the hey.
cheers...

your idea is great, I have it (without solar panel and price for me was 60$ :-(...), I exported GPX track to Sprtypal web site from it. Result was great: Sportypal web recalculate distance of the workout, time, average speed even start/stop time, max speed, max/min altitude.....even more Sportypal put my results in data base and I can see my results altogether for a week, month or full year...
Thank you for idea because for road bikeing I will stil use my phone, but when I go on MTB then i will put Iblue data loger, if I crash it is not so expensive, these days is cheaper :-)

Here I have the same track mapped with both softwares sportypal and sporttracker.
So you can take a look and compare. They can offer pretty much the same features, but with sportypal the the track is more accurate. For free, it worth play with them.
SportyPal:

Nokia SportTracker:

Hi Lebronx,
no matter of your phone or your software, you did great workout on a good track,
It is fan when you can share with others your results, someone can be inspired (in this case me),
thanks to you and Sportypal.

nowdays the option to share and analyze the tracks with the other people around you makes the cycling to be more fun, to make you more competative and also if you want to show people the place you have been riding, or if you're organising an event and want to show people where it is.

if you have an iPhone get RunKeeper Pro... keeps nice stats and uploads them to their website...
you'd want to find a way to mount it to the bike though, and you'll want a Juice Pack Air case / battery, as using GPS on the iPhone will eat battery life... with the JPA, you can get a good 7-8 hours use out of it while using GPS though...

georgegu- thanks for sharing, The weather was finally warm enough for me to try out imapmyride on my Iphone. Well my first attempt failed, I didn't realize I have to leave the program running hot and "lock the screen" opps. Thats an Iphone thing for now, steve jobs is very controlling. Also, I am going to buy the mount advertised on mapmyride so perhaps I can have it in front of me.

I use MyTracks on an android phone (was using a MyTouch 3G until I got my Nexus One).
Battery life can be an issue, I use up about 30% on my one hour commute. I picked up an 18000 mAh battery pack for long rides. I did a 200km brevet last month in 10:48, and the power pack was still at 3/4 capacity (and the phone was at 100%). Based on that I should be good for over 40 hours, which ought to get me through a 600km brevet. The biggest downside is that it weighs half a pound. But they make smaller ones if you don't need that much capacity.
I can upload rides from MyTracks to Google Maps and the data to a speadsheet on Google Docs. The map of my 200k brevet is here. Clicking on the end marker pulls up the details and elevation graph.

I haven't been cycling for a while, since the weather was very bad, i downlaoded the new version for sportyp, there are some new things on, i think it's now on the apple store too.
New feature i like, is the 3d map of the ride, for MTB especially look good.
