The built in google maps app works great for me. I don't really have other ones I use for getting around.

Even if I didn't already have an Edge 705 with full maps, I don't think I'd get much use out of my iPhone with MotionX. The one time I left it on, I found that the GPS just sucked too much power (IIRC it ate about half my battery in a couple of hours). Also, once you've drained it, you not only lose your GPS, but your phone as well.

AroundMe is really handy though. I use it a lot in my car, and may get some use out of it on the bike this summer. I'm hoping it will be good for finding water stops when I'm out exploring unfamiliar areas, but I don't know how complete its database is.

Now if you're talking about using the iPhone as an in-car navigation replacement, well I hope Garmin is nervous. Would be nice to see some innovation out of them.

Yes,,, turn the screen off and you can ride better part of the day. Have been using MotionX for a year or so.

Have also just downloaded B.iCycle - only a couple of short rides with this app, but is easy to use, great interface.

iPhone 3GS:

For general navigation, the built-in "Maps" function has been a big help. It's lead me back to civilization several times when exploring "new roads" and finding they didn't go where I thought they did, or how to get there from here. "Camera" has been good, too, and avoiding having to carry another instrument around with me... MotionX GPS and GPS Drive are good, as well as Google Earth, also for navigation in strange or odd places. Weather Channel is good for ride predictions and forecasts on tour...

I'm an LCI, so I have a couple PDF applications (GoodReader) loaded, so that I have all my course material loaded for by-the-road reference, as well as some key YouTube links. It's been a great little biking and teaching tool...
