*stem*-mounted GPS ?

I'd like to use my eTrex for some trips, but have no room on the handlebar (the left support is for the light, the bell is to the right, as seen in the pic). There's room on the stem, but would require a GPS mount that allows the GPS to be transversal to the bar.

If I interpret the pictures correctly, neither Garmin's nor MEC's mounts allow this.

Suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

Move the bell to the stem/steerer tube.
Mount the light upside down?

After having too many Garmin mounts break, I switched to just putting a little foam pad over the stem and then using a couple rubber bands to hold the GPS in place on top of the pad. It protects the GPS from road shock (the eTrex models are prone to shut off if the batteries vibrate from bumps) and can give a little if the bike falls over or is leaned against something. Replace the rubber bands periodically as they start to break when exposed to UV from sunlight.

So far I've been using this mounting method for over 10 years and about 100,000 miles without any problems. The Garmin mounts would fail after only a few thousand miles.

Good idea. I like that I can take the GPS out without messing with the back cover (the commercial mounts replace the cover with their own), especially that I use the GPS for hiking as well.

Thanks!

Here's another option, a stem/headset cap that you can mount stuff on:

+1 Exactly what I have done.

This tiny BBB is set up for index finger operation by rotating it forward. Not only easier to use, but out of the wind.
I could move it out a bit farther, and mount something else on the space next to the stem if I wanted.

Another option would be a "bar extender" that clamps to the handlebar (takes up very little space) and extends out past the stem, like this one (BDop Dashboard Genie)

I'm pretty sure the Garmin mount will work on your stem, and not just the bars. It's a square with holes to run the ties through in all four directions, so you can mount it landscape or portrait.

At the last Critical Mass, I noticed that someone had a GPS ( looked like an eTrex, but I'm not certain ) on the stem. I didn't ask how he held it there, as we were going up a pretty steep hill at the time.

The Garmin mount works on either the stem or bars.

My co-worker lent me his eTrex Vista HCx. The mount it comes with doesn't work on the stem.

Perhaps I spoke too soon. The Garmin I have is the Edge 305, and the mount works on both.

I don't know why no one has mentioned these inexpensive little devices. Similar idea to a Dashboard Genie, but cheaper, simpler, and probably lighter. There are several different styles available. Your LBS should have something along these lines.

I use something similar to mount my eTrex HCX on the stem. I haven't experience breakage of the Garmin mount yet, but I keep a pretty close eye on it.

Nice ideas there. I have an etrex, but I started using my Nuvi and it seems to be way more accurate. For now, I just duct taped the mount to the handle bar and it held very well during a pretty demanding off-road run. I'm going to try to figure out a detachable system using a reflector mount. I'll post pics if I ever figure it out!
