Edge 705 searches for WWII locations

This is just kind of a precursor post to what hopefully will get added to in the near future. I'm on Ie Shima island in Japan. Ie Shima was invaded around 16 April 1945 and the Japanese surrender delegation landed here and transferred to American C-54 aircraft then proceeded to meet Gen MacArthur in Manila.

Also this is where Ernie Pyle, the famous WWII reported was killed during the invasion.

I'm here for 2 to 3 months working and shipped a Dahon Folding Bike down here and am using my Edge 705 and the internet as a resource for locating sites of interest during the battle and to try to uncover some mysteries before history forgets them.

Today with the use of some old army maps on the internet and by having plotted the approximate location in Garmin Road Trip I'm searching for Government Hill House and Bloody Ridge, the scenes of the most intense fighting here. The spots are just below the only mountain on the island, Gusuku referred to by the Army as the Pinnacle at that time.

Once there I'll backtrack down to the beaches where the landing occurred and try to find evidence of the many many caves I've seen photos of. I've found many many defensive position "caves" already on the other side of the island. Most of just dug out areas in rock face, many with a turn to them I suspect to pull a gun and the gunner out of site quickly.

I've even found some of these sites with sheets of wood in them although your guess is as good as mine as to whether the wood "floors" are 65 years old or 65 weeks old. Interesting nonetheless.

Again I hope to add to this although Mother Nature is confounding my search on this fine Sunday with rain. I don't mind the rain but my GPS and camera might.

More to come soon I hope. I'm excited about using the Edge 705 not just to measure my rides and times but to interface the map with old resources and find things. Seems like it might be fun.

Installment number 1 to my saga. Realize of course this is relevant here. Searched conducted via bicycle and by using Edge 705 and RoadTrip software.

that sounds like a fun way explore history. I'll have to keep uses like that in mind when I get a GPS
