The Magicshine taillight is here

$55 Over at GeoManGear

It has a 3W LED, so should be comparable to the Dinnote 140R. Uses the exact same battery and charger as the other magicshine gear. Over on mtb forums GeoMan said the light head on its own should be available in a few weeks, so just pop in a y cable with your existing magicshine and you're good to go.

Personally, I am a little bit disappointed, but only because I don't own other magicshine gear. I'm using p7 torches, so adding a whole 4 cell battery pack just for a tail light seem excessive, and also kind of expensive. If, however, I was already commuting with the magicshine adding a y cable would be a very attractive and cheap option. Light-head only for the headlight saved you about $40, so light-head only taillight might be VERY cheap (i guess we'll have to wait and see)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing reviews.

We need to be able to buy just the lighthead and a Y cable for the hoards of us with a MS light already.

Also, we HAVE to see a video of the flash modes to compare it to Dinotte.

That battery pack doesn't weigh any more than a Dinotte pack, I'm wagering.

That's a good price, but whether it's a good light has yet to be seen. Brightness isn't everything. Dispersion, intensity and flash patterns are what makes/breaks a taillight.

I doubt that testing is a priority now for the staff at Geomangear.com. It's founder, Jay Stopestad, lost his 2-year fight with cancer last month. Maybe an early adopter who purchases one will post test results and photos or videos.

Mounting appears to like the MS 900 with the quick release rubber band..If it just straps to your seat post and has no provisions for adjustment then it will be pointed at the dirt for alot of us..

I don't think that's what CFXMarauder was talking about. The way I read his post, it's not about whether the light will move, but rather the light will be mounted on the seat post. If your seat post angles back, the light would be pointing too far downwards.

That being said, the genius of the DiNotte (and the MS mounting) is that it can mount on any appropriately sized tube. Buy a 10 foot stick of 1" PVC conduit (I can get it at my local hardware store for about $1 for 10 feet), and you'll see dozens of ways to mount the DiNotte/MS to the back of your bike in a way so the light can be aimed.

In principle, if you can mount the PVC either parallel or perpendicular to the ground, you'll have a mounting spot. For example:
1- cut a 7" chunk off and zip tie it to the back and top of your rear rack. I've done this, and it works very well. However, it takes up real estate on the rack's platform.
2- cut a 7" chunk off , make cutouts in the ends (the cutouts keep the PVC from rotating), and zip tie it to the rack stays under the back platform of your rear rack. I've done this with my DiNotte and would only do it with the MS proves to be waterproof. I did this on one bike and I put a piece of rigid, corrugated plastic underneath to protect the light a little bit from all the road grime/water. I've ridden hundreds of miles in the rain with no ill effect to my DiNotte.
3- cut a 3" chunk off and make a cutout in the last inch on one side. Zip tie that to the seatpost parallel to the ground. I've never done this, but if you don't have a rear rack, this would be an option. I'm not sure if it would be narrow enough for the thighs...
4- cut a 3" chunk off and attach it to an adjustable-angle seatpost reflector mount. You can attach it to the reflector mount by drilling a small hole all the way through and then screwing it on. I've never done this, but if you did, you could stick the thing straight up in the air, perpendicular to the ground. This way your light could be aimed properly.
5- use the DiNotte tail light mount on the seatpost. You can get if from DiNotte for $14. I have the DiNotte tail light mount and rarely use it. I mostly use a PVC mount instead for my 140L.

A note about mounting the light: I wrap the PVC in vulcanized electrical tape (aka splicing tape). This makes for a non-slip rubbery mounting surface. It's a rubberized tape that self sticks. Wrapping a layer around your bars or PVC where the light goes is like wrapping it in inner-tube. A roll sells for less than $4.00 and should be available at most any hardware store. I prefer this over regular electrical tape b/c it is rubberized where as the regular tape is more plastic.

Do the above, and you'll still have 8 feet of conduit left.

I actually double wrapped my dinotte around one of the wires in my saddle. It's been stable there since last summer. Puts it a few inches higher than the normal Dinotte mount.

I have already ordered two of the new tail lights from Geoman. I'm happy enough with the headlights that I didn't need to see a test first. Already have the Y cable but went with the batteries to have back ups. Hope to try them next weekend!

Someone please post video, and also explain how the blink modes look, if video doesn't show it clearly.

If it's just a plain old 3 hz strobe, it's not really a competitor to the Dinotte.

First thing I noticed however is there is no button which means no way to tell how much battery life you have.

Is any info included describing estimated battery life in any of the modes? (Sidebar: I always halve whatever mfgrs say to guesstimate what I'll get when it's well below freezing in the winter.) I have a MS headlight - works great. Love the illumination of the Dinotte taillight, but from what I gather on their site, the battery won't last for an all-day ride in the cold (using my halving approach). Guess I need to ride faster, eh?

That is the way high intensity rear lights are supposed to work. The idea is that you illuminate a wide area of the ground, making you appear larger to approaching traffic, without pointing the light directly at them bleaching out their cones (which makes you appear smaller to oncoming traffic and also obliterates their ability to see details around where you are).

Look at ALL the example setups on Dinotte's website. ALL of them have the rear light pointed at the ground illuminating the ground. Pointing such a light directly backwards is a jackass move undertaken by people who haven't ever driven behind themselves.

Yes, I do study the structure and function of the mammalian visual system in a professional capacity TYVM.

Hm. I can't think of a single professionally-designed taillight system (for cars) that points at the ground. Car/truck taillights, emergency vehicles, everything with warning lights, it points at eye level.

Lighting up the ground behind me isn't going to do a lot of good, all the traffic coming up behind me is doing 60 MPH, the ground is asphalt so that means it has an albedo of 18%, so 80% of the light I paint it with is just lost, and with people approaching that fast, they won't get much of a chance to see the ground patch behind me before they'd have to make an emergency maneuver to avoid hitting me.

My theory is that with people texting and screwing with gadgets in the car, they may have their eyes off the road for 5 to 10 seconds at a time, and even when they're looking at the road, they're not paying that much attention. So I want to be sure that they get at least 2 chances to see me between poking at their phone or iPod, which means 20 seconds before they get to me at least, and during each of those chances, I want them to not have much choice but to notice me; I want to SCREAM HEY, LOOK OVER HERE, PAY ATTENTION! not "um, excuse me, if you'd be so kind." At 60 MPH, that means they need to see me almost 1/2 mile before they get to me. I don't believe that pointing my taillight at the ground achieves that.

I've put my bike on the side of the road with the light (Dinotte 140L) pointing at eye level, and then approached it, and it didn't bother me. I've also had many people compliment me on the taillight.

In addition, I use the light during the day; at that time, painting the pavement is clearly utterly useless. And yes, it makes a difference; at least one person has told me that they probably would not have seen me without the light on (we were heading east in the morning with the sun coming up).

It's mounted on the bike rack but haven't put the rack back on the bike yet. the light is tipped down because the rack on the bike sits at an angle. I'm going to run the wire under the rack and poke a hole in the bottom of my bag, so the battery and connection are in the bag.

I agree with all that, also you create a diversion from looking at where you are, and theres the "WTF is that?" response which confuses motorists.

I once studied the structure and function of the mammalian visual system by discecting a sheeps eye. It was pretty gross.
