Best iphone apps?

Just got a new iphone. What cycling +/or fitness related apps do people like? Any other standout-must have apps?

snydly 09-15-10 12:19 PM

I have a friend who loves cyclemeter. Looks pretty handy, but I've already got an Edge. Just bought an iphone myself, your avatar has been my background wallpaper!

I use B.icycle and like it a lot.

MotionX is probably the best app I've used. Down side is all GPS tracking apps drain your battery in 1.5hrs.
Which is fine on my touring bike with dynamo hub + USB charger but sucks on my road bike.

Finding a decent bike mount for the iPhone 4 has been more of a challenge.

I was using MotionX lite which is good, but based on other reviews I recently purchased Cyclemeter and it's excellent. Love the fact that you can compare times etc on your regular rides (with voice commentary if you like) and it links to a calendar. Can also export your stats into a spreadsheet. There are ways to reduce battery drain listed on their website. Very impressed.

I just read a review about Cyclemeter and you can get over 4.5hrs in battery saving mode. It looks like there are more graph outputs then MotionX. Hmmm i might have to try it :)

Correction: I made the mistake of putting the iPhone in my pocket without turning the screen off...that's why my battery was drained in 1.5hrs while MotionX was on. Today i rode for 2.5hrs with MotionX GPS tracking running at my battery was still 80% full :)

Has anyone ever tried google's "my tracks". It integrates with google maps using your phones gps and tells you everything from miles to average speed/max speed altitude. Lets you export files as well as send directly to google my maps for editing or to share with your friends.

It's also 100% free.

runkeeper hands down. I love the app and there's a huge support community behind it. The one thing it is lagging right now is auto pause. But it makes up for it in its web interface, real time tracking, and various other features. As far as a mount-checkout the tiagra or dahon mounts (water resistant, shock resistant). I just picked up one and am pretty happy with it.

I don't have an iPhone, but I saw this on another forum today. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/outfr...21f9fp0c0s5814

Looks pretty nice just to try out for free. Hope it helps

I bought and tried a lot of them, cyclemeter is great

I like cyclemeter. Very intuitive, smart, doesn't drain battery, your data is not captive, no login required, etc etc etc...

The only thing that could make me switch, was if some of the apps started supporting sensors:

http://www.wahoofitness.com/

Could allow the iPhone to also capture heart rate, cadence, wheel speed, power, etc...

I tried 'my tracks' this morning for my commute, it seemed to work exactly perfectly, except I forgot to turn it on until I was a mile into my ride (missed that 1st plunge-and-climb) Also not much battery drain, was like 92% when I turned it on, 89% when I got to work a half hour later.

I have no idea if google will use tracks that people generate to fine-tune its 'bike there' directions option from google maps.

Well, after today's commute, the elevation estimates were 50% different from yesterdays and the grade estimates even farther. But, the distance and speed estimates still seem plausible.

Cyclemeter rules. I use it on every ride. The auto stop works great.

LightningRider 10-09-10 09:05 PM

what's the best bike mount for iphone4?

ak47clown 10-10-10 01:30 PM

checkout the dahon weather resistant case. I've got the $30 one off amazon (different company, same product but i just can't remember what it was called atm) It techinically isn't made for the Iphone 4 but it's worked great for me. I've taken it on a century ride as well as few other decent rides since getting it and have had no issues. One thing i would recommend, however, is to use a rubberband as a secondary latch. I learned my lesson on a RAM mount previously that you shouldn't depend solely on the mount's clasp.

Could you tell us which ones you bought and tried please for comparison sake?

thanks

$pecial 10-11-10 12:35 AM

I've tried MyTracks and MapMyRide (both because they are free and I am cheap) and one downfall to each is if the app crashes, or your battery dies your route is lost. Also, with MyTracks i lost a route just when I clicked "save" it just disappeared.I have only used MapMyRide 4 times, but i like the stuff you can do on the website. I am probably going to check out cyclemeter after reading reviews here and on itunes.

Another vote for Cyclemeter. Great app that being updated nicely. Devs are helpful and responsive.

Ok, after checking I bought cycle watch, cycle tracker pro and cyclemeter.

Cycle Watch initially looks like cyclemeter, but cyclemeter does much more. I used it for a few days. There's a free version of cyclewatch to try out.

Cycle Tracker Pro wouldn't even launch until I created an online login and signed in. Deleted it immediately because of that.

Cyclemeter was a pleasant surprise and once I started using it, I haven't stopped. I've logged all my rides on it now.

Zaphod Beeblebrox 10-15-10 02:58 PM

+another. Cyclemeter is awesome.

I've been tracking my commutes since august and I love how you can look at your progress on the same route over long periods of time.

I also like to use it for long rides where I just set out with no destination in mind. When I get lost (which I inevitably do) cyclemeter can get me home.
I can run it for 4-5 hours on a full charge with my 3GS.

Cyclometer.

I have about a half dozen cycling apps on my phone. Cychosis is probably the one I use the most. Others include MotionX GPS, SpokesNYC. LiveStrong, IMapMyRide, and one by a local club listing their rides.

RideTheCity is probably a good alternative to SpokesNYC if your city is included. I find the built-in Map app indispensable. I also use Twitteriffic for following a number of cycling related subjects on twitter like #BikeNYC, #BikeNews, @NYCBridgeReport and a number of other cyclists and cycling organizations and shops who tweet.

The best GPS I have found for the iPhone is Navagon.
It's pricy but what you are paying for is all of the maps (you don't download them on the fly, they are part of the app).
It is better than the gps in the Acura and better than the gps in the BMW.
It is not cycling specific and doesn't have tracking but if you need a gps to tell you how to get somewhere, it's the best hands down.
