What's a better bet, single AA, or 3 x AAA?

I'm done using flashlights on my bars, my Magicshine (still performing well after a year) is sooooo much better. However, I would like to run a helmet light, but I find that my 2 x aa Dealextreme lights are a bit long and cumbersome on lockblocks, still more so my P7 light. So, I'm thinking about a smaller light, convenient top pocket type thing, and shorter so it doesn't swing around.

I'm leaning towards either a nice shiny stainless steel light, or one of the zooming types . Am I better off going for single AA, or triple AAA?

The total energy in watt hours is about the same between one AA and three AAA cells. The single AA will HAVE to have voltage regulator in it; you can't run an LED off 1.5 volts. The triple AAA lights might try to get away without one.

Also you can draw more instantaneous current from a AA than AAA, so the AA may have a brighter high mode.

BTW, the 2nd one there probably will take a 14500 cell. I have a black colored light that looks like that from DX. It's a LOT brighter with a 14500 than with a single or even two AA cells in it. I love the thing with a 14500 in it because it's damned bright (still not a candle to an 18650 P7, but really bright for the size) and it fits in my pants pocket without bulging.

I made a mount for a helmet light out of a wine cork and a large O-ring (O-ring looped through the vents securing the light at head and tail, cork as a shim.) . It's dead solid, and I use a 18650 powered light. You might want to consider that option for your P7.

I bought a couple of headlamps last month to experiment with a helmet light, more for being seen than seeing.. Here is the best one in the lightweight category.. Bought from HK but arrived to my door in 7 days.. The body is plastic but the head is alloy..

Very nice tight beam, high mode with nimh give 2 hours, I usually just leave in medium mode which is fine for being seen.. I just use velcro straps to attach to helmet..

REI has great velcro in 12 - 18 or 24 inch sizes.. I use the 18 inch with this headlmap

Yeah, it's more about being seen for me as well, but I'd quite like something that can double as a jacket pocket light. Sounds like AA is the way to go, and maybe I should consider 14500 too. That would mean I'd need yet another charger, my desk already being populated by a big charger for AA, AAA, PP9, C cells etc, an 186500 charger for my P7, and a charger for my Magicshine.

I have a universal charger that does 18650 as well as 14500 (and a few others).
