Innovative Reflectivity

Are there any innovative reflectors out there? Or anything that's just cool?

So far, I've seen:
  • standard reflectors that squeeze into your spokes;
  • front/rear reflectors;
  • things that make your spokes shiny; and
  • reflective tape and paint

Is there anything else, such as a large reflector that you could put inside your spokes? Is there anything that is as reflective and visible to a headlight as, say, a street sign?

3M makes a bunch of adhesive backed vinyl that is as reflective as a street sign. You can also find scotchlite stuff that isn't quite as reflective as the OSHA standard stuff, but basically everything is based off of adhesive backed vinyl. Just buy a huge roll and learn to apply it. I'd say your spokes are the worst things to make reflective, because they're small and move faster than anything else but the rim and tire, yet aren't a continuous surface in rotation.

I made some logos out of scotchlite vinyl and they turned out great, but if i was trying to get bright i'd just cover a whole frame in the stuff, and maybe even make a ghetto disc wheel as per the hardcourtbikepolo diy.

http://lightweights.org/ might be what you're looking for. It's kind of a cross between reflectors in the spokes and reflective sidewalls.

You can buy high-performance reflective tape like you're seeing on the street sign, stick it to a nice tough flexible plastic sheet of some kind, and zip-tie that into your spokes.

3M Scotchlite, but it's a manufacturer commodity trademark and is included in many different products. Kind of like Gore-Tex, it's a technology trademark that is used in lots of different fabrics in lots of different garments, Scotchlite is used in many different materials and utilized in lots of different products. It's just that you're better off with vinyl that says
Scotchlite High Intensity Grade 2870 and 3870
or 'engineer grade' or whatnot. here's a random website explaining some of the types of products on the market:
