Hey, I have a 1998 Subaru Forester. I want a high quality roof rack for my car but I honestly have no idea of these sort of things. I just like to ride my bike and pay people to fix it for me - pathetic. Here is a link to a car that has the same rook set up as mine (came with built in bars). Thanks!

My son has a 1997 Subaru Outback with two Yakima Forklift bike carriers attached directly to the crossbars of the roof rack. They work well, but the crossbars flex some. A rack with crossbars that attach to the side rails of the roof rack would flex less.

You might want to go to a local bike shop that sells racks. They could help you make a good selection.

I don't have a roof rack, so I have nothing constructive to add. That said, I really got a kick out of the post title. Why would you want to put a bike on your chess pieces?

I don't have a roof rack for bikes either. I actually have an older thule, but I've never gotten bike attachments or adapters for the current cars we own.

I like the Rockymounts TieRod. They fasten to the factory crossbars on your roof rack. I can't say whether or not the Subaru crossbars are satisfyingly robust enough.

A buddy of mine has a Thule rack for his Subaru. I know Thule and Yakima tend to be standards that have a huge selection of carriers, and can be found just about anywhere. I have a Thule that's about 20 years old and still works great. Right now it's attached to the stock roof rack of our minivan.

Yakima and Thule are the standards. Check their web sites and you can enter your car make, model, and year and they will tell you the parts you need.

Exactly, These companies have tested every model made and will tell you which will or will not work.

Last year Thule had a recall on the Peleton model that fits on factory crossbars. I'm sure the redesigned Peleton carrier is fine. I even tried to buy a pair of the redesigned Peleton carriers last summer, but they couldn't get them to me when I needed them. I ended up with the Yakima Forklift carriers which work fine.

The crossbars on the Subaru Outback are flexible, but they're stiff enough to carry two road bikes.
