Difference between Shimano dh-3d30 and dh-3n72 dynohubs?
Does anyone know the difference between Shimano dh-3d30 and dh-3n72 dynohubs? Google was not very useful.
I presume the DH-3D30 was an earlier generation model and I believe the DH-3N72 is comparable to Ultegra. Is there a difference in drag/power output?
Thanks,
philip

For starters, the 3D30 is a six-bolt disc model, whereas the 3N72 isn't disc-capable. Because the 3N72 doesn't need to make room for a disc rotor, it would make a symmetrical wheel, requiring only one spoke length and being a bit stronger (although hopefully that's an academic point).
For Ultegra-level quality, the 3N80 is the one to look at. Alloy axle, 0.4 pounds lighter (!), no disc mount.

The 3N80 is the newer version of the 3n72. Only real difference is the lightening cuts on the LH side and the resulting lighter weight. Mechanical are Identical and the 72 can be found for a few dollars less.

I have a cheap Shimano dynohub on my commuter that I think may be the one you want to know about. It's a lot tougher to turn by hand, still don't notice it on the bike.
I have both a 3n71 and 3n80, they really are very similar

I'll piggy-back on this thread instead of lauching a new one.
Someone I know broke the hub on her DH-3D30 dynamo hub, but the internal might still work
Google didn't help: Can you confirm that Shimano doesn't sell just the hub separately, so it's a basket case?
Thank you.

Shimano is somewhat infamous for not selling spares. My understanding is they consider these hubs to be non serviceable.
