Cateye Strada Double Wireless

Hey guys...hope you can help me with this one. I bought this Cateye mainly so I could tell my speed and cadence while on my trainer. It works great for that...no problem. The only problem and I can not figure out why, but it will not work when I ride on the road. As soon as I get it off the trainer, it works off and on and mostly off, while on the road. Just wondering if anyone else has had this same problem. Thanks!!!

Nothing works?

Doesn't quite make sense.

You should be able to demonstrate that things work without riding.

The cadence should display when you turn the crank (backwards).
The speed should display when you spin the wheel.

Everything works great while on the trainer, but once I hit the road it quits! Sometimes it works for a brief period on the road, but not more then 30 seconds. I am so lost, I can not figure it out, just thought someone out there has seen this before. Thanks for the reply.

1) Works on trainer.
2) Fails on road.
3) Works on trainer?

???

Yours is a strange problem.

Are you using a wierd LED light on the road?

The likely problem is related to magnet position and sensor position (and those things moving around).

If those things are set, there isn't much you can fix.

Did you buy it from a shop?

(Cateye has a 2 y warrenty.)

Does it work when spinning the wheel or the crank (not riding)?

I have a Cateye double wireless computer. It doesn't work with my LED headlight on steady. The sensor could be on too loose causing it to move around on the road. Mine stops working every once in a while if the sensor position moves. All I have to is reposition the sensor and it will start working again.

"Works" and "quits" is not exactly a meaningful description of the problem. What does "quits" mean specifically??? It turns off entirely? It starts to display meaningless data? Something else?

CHAUSE1 05-22-13 07:31 PM

Sorry what I am meaning by quits, is it does not get a reading. It goes to zeros. I do think it has to do with my Garmin Edge 200 or my Nite Rider lumens 500.

I also have a Nite Rider Lumens 500 and a Garmin Edge 200. I guess that is my problem, I might be able to reposition them. Thanks!

I have a piece of garbage Sigma 1009 STS that exhibits the same symptoms. Very reliable on the trainer, and on the road it's roughly 90% good for the first 1000km, then 50/50 for the next 1000km, then progressively degrading to the point of non-reliability by 3000km. It has over 3000km on the winter indoors and has never once exhibited a problem. This unit doesn't even have a cadence, just a clock, speed, and average.

Changed the battery but same problem.

Changed the wheel sensor...Solution!!! New sensor was a hand-up freebie at LBS that I patronage.

It's much more likely the light would cause the problem than the Garmin.

You have to make sure you do the same thing (as much as possible) on the road that you are doing on the trainer.

The Strada wireless is very picky about where the magnets are placed. They need to be very close to the sending unit. I am guessing that when you get out on the road - the sending unit and/or sensorsget jiggled and move out of place. Adjust and place them very carefully, tie down tightly with cable ties. I've been using the Strada double wireless for a year and really like it once I figured out the issues.

Glynis27 05-31-13 07:58 AM

It's most likely the light causing the problem. We see that issue quite frequently and it's the only thing that keeps me from buying a wireless computer. You can try moving them as far from each other as possible, but you still may have problems periodically. Could also try moving the light to your head if possible.

Start by removing everything off the bike except the cat eye. If it doesn't work then its not the Garmin or the Niterider. if it starts working again start adding the other equipment back on one item at a time and see which is affecting the cat eye.

or you can call cateye, I have in the past and they have been very helpful

Or, try to find a wired model. Mine works every time.
