routevisualizer - Cumulative elevation gain calculation, free web app
 

Hi all,

We have set up a free web based application, based on Google Maps, for cumulative elevation gain calculation (and loss) of routes. Different slopes are also depicted with colors.

Takes practice to get it to display a whole route. Sometimes it just stops displaying...in which case you have to refresh the page. Try as I did I could not make it display a whole route Very nice though how it can display each climb and descent and color code it's angle of ascent or descent. While it is nice that it displays the angle of the climbs it generalizes the descents regardless of how passive or steep they are. Not a big issue as a downhill is always easy but if you want to see the true nature of the terrain you have to set the map up and reverse the direction. Not a big issue and since climbs are more important when planning rides this tool can be very useful. Thanks for the link.

Which browser are you using (and what OS)? Also, was it a long route to calculate?

As for the descending slopes, it has been inferred that cyclists usually care for the elevation gain part (which kind of depicts "difficulty") so we focused on that for the moment.

Just out of curiosity, what's the granularity of the elevation data in Google maps?

Firefox is my browser and Windows my OS. Don't ask me about versions, my browser was updated not too long ago but my Windows...another story. My computer has some glitch that won't let up update anything from Microsoft. Likely something to do with the anti-virus but I've never been able to fix it though I've tried. Never had a problem with the OS though.

I was trying to configure the route ( loop ) that I last rode that kicked my butt on the climbs. The drag feature on google map is a PITA. When trying to configure the loop the map will try to redirect to the road providing the shortest trip. This ( of course ) is not what you want to happen when planning a ride. I did manage to get the whole loop on one try but not before setting and resetting the start and end points multiple times. This would work much better if you had the option to set multiple points like with "ridewithGPS". Other than that this is still a useful tool ( even with the present limitations ).
Would be great if you could get together with the "ridewithGPS" website and work with them. Then it would be absolutely sweet. :thumb:

@01 Cat: Well, the definition of waypoints should normally be equivalent to dragging the provided route in order for it to pass by certain locations on the map (as you already did). However, setting explicit waypoints *before* letting the tool calculate the route would probably be more functional...

Took all of one minute to map out my last route. Simple as one, two , three. I noticed you changed the color coding, nice touch. Now it is more intuitive. Good show! This one also earns a spot on my android bookmarks. ( * Let me know when this becomes a downloadable app )

Might be a good idea to included a Miles/ft. conversion for us Yanks. Would also be nice if you could save routes that you mapped. That would mean a log in/out process but would help if you wanted to recheck the map ( on your smart phone ) while doing a planned route.
