Garmin 830 & Bontrager Light Network
In short, every time I turn on the Edge, the lights turn on because they are set to auto even if I am not on the bike. For example, I will turn off the Edge, remove it from the bike and then use it for some settings review/ride review and then the lights come on. I also found that I would remove my headlight from the bike but it would turn on and I found that it was on the whole time I went for the ride.
I am starting to think that the automatic turn/on and off feature is more hassle than it is worth.
I have the Bontrager IQ app on my Edge.
Any suggestions?

I agree that this automation is unnecessary, since your headlight is on your handlebar and well within reach...And a tail light can just be turned on at the start of a ride and turned off at the end.
But you didn't waste your money: I have Bontrager headlight and tail light with this feature, even though I don't own a compatible computer. They are good lights.

On the Edge 530 with Garmin Varia - the options are to start when the computer is turned on or when the timer starts. This is done in the sensor setup. I know - different case but maybe helpful.

yes that solves it. it is a bit annoying but I like it because then I don't forget to turn on my lights. my garmin headlight that mostly get used in flashing mode. has issues if I ride another bike without it. overall its pretty reliable. but lights seems a bit more finicky then cadence sensors and such.

Really though, are the ANT+ cross platform? Bontrager and Garmin with other head units
My Hammerhead has great Varia Radar radar integration, but not lights.
Is this a common problem in the unmatured tech?

lights seem a lot more finicky then other things. like on some of my garmins some lights wont turn on and off and some will. though the lights connected and it shows battery level.

I just recently got a 530 and it works like this with my Flare RT tail light. Very nice feature in my opinion.

I turned off the auto on. It was annoying and a couple of times when charging my 1030 in the house and not turning it off I ran the Bontrager light battery down. The light on the bike was about 60 feet away from the head unit.
I also removed the Bontrager light control. Night riding off road it was great. Changing light brightness was easy on my 1030 screen. Battery charge condition was convenient. On road it interfered with my Varia radar tail light. I’ll have to try again soon. It has been over a year so may be the app has been updated.
