Powertap wheelsets HED Ardennes vs Zipp 202s - two wheels or one w powertap?

    Hi all,

Planning to take the plunge and get powertap for the Cervélo r3, but not to sure about the tech and needs. Like the look of the HED Ardennes that come w powertap g3 built in for about 1900 dollars, but wondering what the value of having both a front and rear wheel with powertap hubs is. Might keep my front wheel and just add a Zipp 202/303 rear wheel only.

    Thoughts, advice?

There's no value in matching the brand of hubs other than esthetics. IMO, there's very little value in matching wheels or even tires, within reason. Performance wise, it makes the most sense to get the Zipp rear rather than the HED set, though the practical difference would be very very small....

You don't say what your front wheel is, but if longer term you looking to have a set of Zipps, starting with the rear would make sense. Don't forget about changing out brake pads for the CF rim.

If it were me, I'd build up a Pacenti SL23 rim on the PT hub. Slightly deeper, wider, and lighter than the HED rim (I have both).

I know this might be a little off topic but it's along the same lines. I just ordered a set of 404 zipps with PT G3 hub on the back. Am I compromising the quality of the zipp wheel by having a PT hub? I know there is a slight weight penalty (in the hub doesnt matter to me) but I am more concerned in the stiffness of the wheel or rolling quality. I do not want to feel like I paid more to degrade the ride.
    Cat 6 going on PRO....

Not in my opinion, but I believe virtually all subjective reports of wheel performance are far more imagined than factual or consequential.
