I tried it and found it to be no better than rubbing some spit into electrodes, which is what I do now. The chest doesn't seem to need wetting, but the electrically conductive plastic electrodes evidently benefit from it.

I just wet my finger under some running water, pull back the strap on my Garmin and swipe it on the electrodes. I've never had a problem doing it this way and never use any gel. The sweat factor ensures that it stays wet.

I've done the spit thing for years, but would often have to reapply during the ride. Earlier this season switched to gel. I find it more consistent and it doesn't dry out as fast as water/saliva. I've tried the nashbar gel and Buh-Bump (amazon) and like them both. The cost is low and each tube lasts a long time.

I find the issue being starting out in cold weather before I start sweating. It can take me 15-20 minutes I to start sweating riding in cold weather. As long as I'm sweating, no spit is necessary, and I always sweat when riding. Spit is only needed or beneficial for the period before I start to sweat.
