Garmin refuses to stand by product

The Garmin VIRB has created some excitement, for good reason, it's a nice cam.

The handlebar mount, not so. I was descending Yerba Buena Road in the Santa Monica Mountains (extremely bumpy) and the Garmin handlebar mount broke, sending the camera bouncing down the road.

BTW, the camera itself miraculously escaped with only minor cosmetic damage. Hardy design there!

Even then that tends to only delay things like this, not prevent them.

Personally, if I think a mount has a weak point, I'm fond of running some dental floss around things on both ends of where I expect it might break (and that might be almost the entire mount) so if the mount breaks, the item will then be dangling by a a short string tied on both ends rather than bouncing down the road.

Not everything has good places to add such a string available, but it looks like your mount does.

It's saved my GoPro at least once -- their mounts are as crappy as this one would seem to be. DealExtreme seems to have some metal mounts -- I may have to try them at some point.

I'm surprised they would refuse. This mount appears to be poorly designed, the camera is expensive, and it is brand new. It is made for handlebars and it is an ACTION cam, so it should be able to withstand a little action on a rough road.

I would call and argue with the rep. I'm assuming you didn't buy it at a b&m retail shop so you can't just walk in with it.

They did the same to me, with a HRM strap. I think from what I've read, everything bicycle related item, nobody stands by nothing.

I shouldn't say nobody stands behind there products, but most don't.

After losing a couple of taillights I started zip tying them to my tool bag. I've had two gopro mounts crack causing the camera to fall off (although there was no damage).

I will link this page when I take the advice to re-contact Garmin.
Great ideas there to secure accessories with floss, ties, etc. I've lost various lights from my bike, and am always concerned about losing another. Putting in a safety line is a no-brainer.

I noticed that the Garmin cycling mount is no beefier than their car mount. Don't they think a bike frame with no suspension might be subject to a little more vibration than a car? Or a LOT more?

I've also had problems with two separate mounts for my Edge 305 breaking. The locking tabs broke off of both.

I think the real issue here is that a lot of companies such as Garmin do pretty well in designing and manufacturing their core product(s) and then "cheapen out" on the accessories. Garmin's HRM straps are a perfect example, as our some of their bike product mounts. They don't seem to worry that people who are paying a big premium for a sports GPS will get peeved about that.

That's a bummer that it doesn't come with a tether cord like their GPS units. I tether all my expensive cockpit gear after my Contour cam fell off during a ride one day.

Sorry Garmin is giving you the run around OP, hopefully you can get it sorted out.
