Continued from my last post: The two AA charger worked pretty good on my phone. Running two apps ( one on standby and one with screen on ) the 2 AA-cell charger kept my phone's internal battery at full charge for ~ 4hrs. In practical use my phones' internal battery will run my Locus GPS app for ~3-3.5 hrs. and still have 30-40% battery left ( using the screen as briefly as I can ). Unless I start doing centuries or brevets ( very unlikely ) this should work for me.

Training Center. Its the PC based software that came with my Garmin 705. I never used Garmin Connect.

Thanks; I bought mine second hand so I knew nothing about that option.

From my last post; The little 2-AA phone charger I bought from Radio Shack I found has some limitations. It seems if the internal battery in the phone discharges too much ( before hooking up the AA charger ) the phone doesn't accept the charge from the charger when plugged in. I figure this is due to the algorithm that the phones' on board charger is using. Likely when the power is low the phone wants to charge using more current than what the little 2-AA charger can provide. Somewhat disappointing but if you hook it up to the phone with at least an 80% charge the AA charger does fine and will keep the phone charged until the AA cells are drained. ( ~4hrs ). Of course this means if you buy one thinking that you have an emergency charger when your phone is almost dead you are still crap out of luck. For that application you will need a good Li-ion charger. ( or perhaps a 4-cell AA charger which I'm sure you can buy somewhere ).

Just wanted to say thanks to all the thoughtful posts this thread...especially of course to Ragball and his most helpful reviews. Price point is important to me, and the edge 800 is being discounted [no longer in production] to where I thought I'd look into these navigation cycling computers. Now I'm thinking strongly about taking the plunge on one of these Magelian 505 units. I'm horrible on getting lost...nothing worse than finding yourself along about 80 miles out counting down the miles one by one, and then realize you've taken a wrong turn and don't know where you are [I attend events in several states here in the south]. Last year, I'd have ended up in South Carolina [in an event from NC] if I hadn't realized I was off course and stopped to call the SAG. I ended up doing a 'not planned century' that day. Anyway, the mapping functions are most important to me...so these comments have been very useful to me. Thanks again [ragballs help makes one want to 'pay it forward'...high marks

If mapping and navigation is your top priority then maybe take a look at the Cyclo 315..

If you don't care about using BT sensors, phone and text notifications and WiFi then the Cyclo 315 is cheaper than the 505 while still giving you complete maps..

Feature wise I'd say the Cyclo 315 is = to the Edge 810 and the Cyclo 505 is = to the Edge 1000

Price wise the Cyclo 315 is $350 and the Cyclo 505 is $430. You can get them 10% off through Clever Training by using the DCR discount code..

Yeah, back in the day I relied on just cue sheets and my trusty cycle computer ( for distance ). Still there are things that take you by surprise, namely closed roads and bridges or roads that seem to change names even though you've made no turns. In those situations ( without a map) you could be SOL. Yep, nothing more disgusting than to ride several miles on a supposed short cut only to find that it is a dead end.

I can't even imagine going for a ride now in unfamiliar territory without a GPS device. Sure, you can ride without one but having a GPS device makes riding into the unknown much more pleasant and relaxing. The more relaxed I am the more enjoyable the ride. Not to mention that when you use a GPS device you really don't have to worry or fixate on "how many miles to next turn" ...etc...
This means you get to relax, look around and take in the scenery and that my friend ( from my perspective ) is what cycling is mostly about.

I have a Garmin Edge 510 and have 6 road bikes all with Garmin compatible "out front" mounts. Can anyone confirm or have knowledge if the Garmin mounts are compatibel with the Magellan mounts? I don't want to have to shell out $30 for 5 additional mounts.

    Thanks!

The Garmin mounts will work but you don't get that clicked in warm and fuzzy.. Also, I get about 1mm of side to side movement when I have the Cyclo on a Garmin mount..

It works but the Cyclo will move a hair.. Me personally, I would not use a Garmin mount on the Cyclo..

I'd like to hear your feedback on the Cyclo as well. I currently have the Garmin Edge 800 and after reading the previous posts, it appears that the Cyclo 505 has a lot to offer. I've been using the Edge since the 205 was out. Still pretty happy with the 800 but it does lack a lot of the new features that I'm looking for. I do like the live-tracking of the 810 but a lot of my riding is up in our local mountains and there is no cell signal. I'm also going to try Real Time Tracker for Android and see how that works in the mean time.

All of my cycling history is on Garmin Connect and Strava. It would be hard for me to move from one brand to another but the Edge 1000 is priced far too high especially with all of the reported issues. The cost savings alone on the 505 really make it a viable option but still hesitant. I don't like that it currently doesn't have a lap feature. And I also read that it doesn't support Daylight Savings Time(?). Not major issues. A major issue would be if it doesn't support my SRAM Quarq power meter. That would be a deal-killer. Gonna have to make a decision soon...

You can check the power meter (or any sensor) compatibility here:

THIS IS ANT - Mio Cyclo 505

I believe some are having an issue with power meter though. Not sure if the SRAM is one of them or not however. V4.1 is suppose to be getting released soon that will fix sensor issues..

The RoadID app provides Live Tracking and a lot of people really like it..

Thanks, Raqball. My power meter appears to be compatible. That's great news. I'll check out the RoadID app too. Are you sure you don't work for Magellan? LOL. I kid..

    Thanks for the link!

Haha, no I'm not a Magellan employee..

Just got fed up with Garmin and the bugs. The Cyclo has a few bugs but nothing as bad as the Edge 1000 and it's quite a bit cheaper as well..

I've used a Garmin 500 for forever. I'm wanting to get TBT now and when I started researching I started seeing info on the Cyclo pop-up. No way I was spending that much for the Garmin anyway!

Cyclo should arrive Monday so I'll post back after a few rides.

    Awesome!

I think we have one bug licked! If you get the speed and distance doubling bug (a few have it, I do not) then an easy solution is to turn 'Auto Wheel Circumference' off and set it manually..

I see you got the HC version and I don't think anyone using the Magellan sensors has experienced this bug..

I am using the Garmin GSC-10 without issue but the new Garmin magnet-less sensors I have won't connect. Magellan says that will be fixed when v4.1 is released..

Very nice to know. Thanks, Raqball. Looking forward on reading the reviews on the other recent purchases too. The price point is much, much better. And it kinda good to know that it works too!

raqball, do you know if the 505 has a wireless mac address anywhere? I have my wireless network locked down and need to permit specific addresses thru my wireless router.

So my new 505hc arrived yesterday. Setup was fairly simple and I did my first ride with it last night. Everything worked great and it even kept detecting heart rate monitors (I didn't wear mine) as other riders showed up. I even connected my phone and tested the text message alert, very cool! When I got back home I had some difficulty doing a wireless sync as I couldn't find the devices mac address and I have my network at home locked down. I opened up the network temporarily and the sync went through perfectly. I hadn't linked to Strava yet so I'll test that after my next ride (hopefully tonight).

Last nights ride was not one of my typical routes, but I was checking the speed on and off with other riders and it seemed to be right on (I used auto detect for setup). I'm going to do a few more rides and test out the turn-by-turn and GPX use and then I'll report back.

If anyone is interested in something specific that hasn't already been covered in the thread please let me know and I'll try it out.

Can you try a GPX route that has a little detour through a bike path?

That seems to be the main navigational issue with me and my Garmin 810. If the Garmin doesn't have the bike path on it's map, it starts giving me a bunch of U-turn directions. It would be nice to see how the Cyclo handles this.
