Garmin Edge 1000 -v- Magellan Cyclo 505

I currently have the Edge 1000 and just ordered the Magellan Cyclo 505

Why did I order the Magellan? Well the Edge 1000 is a disaster! My 1st few rides with the 1000 were okay but I did have some bugs / issues. They have gotten worse and are now to the point where I have had to turn Bluetooth completely off..

Edge 1000 bugs:

1) Screen lock. Happens all the time now if I dare to touch the screen.
2) Bluetooth disconnects. These happen in 2 different ways
  • Complete disconnect.
  • Partial disconnect. Edge says it's connected but will fail the BT sync with the Connect App
3) Sensor disconnects. These are directly related to the complete BT disconnects.
4) Di2 gearing information can't be saved in the settings. It reverts instantly back to the default values
5) Edge remote goes to sleep. One press is needed to wake it back up and a 2nd press is needed for it to register the action

These bugs have all gotten progressively worse with more use. It's either that or I am noticing them more now that the new/cool factor has worn off..

The Edge 1000 has been out for a month and even though there are massive issues, no update at all from Garmin. An update is rumored but it's still about a month away according to DCR..

Now onto why I purchased the Magellan Cyclo 505..

It has the following similarities with the Edge 1000
  • Nice big and clear screen
  • Phone and text notifications
  • Di2 integration
  • Cycling specific navigation with complete maps installed
  • Wifi for instant uploads after the ride

What I loose by switching over to the Magellan Cyclo 505
  • Only has 2 customizable screens while the Edge 1000 has 5
  • The ability to use the Edge Remote which I love!
  • Segments

I hope to have the Cyclo 505 by the end of the week and will keep this -v- thread updated as I move along with it.

Some initial issues with the Cyclo 505 were recently fixed via an update based on all my research. From what I can tell, Magellan is committed to updating the Cyclo and making it work where as with Garmin it's much more of the same as far a software/updates go..

If anyone has the Mio / Magellan Cyclo 505 please jump in and share your thoughts..

Photos and more comparisons to come once I get the Cyclo 505 in my grubby paws..

Just a quick question. I am interested in the Magellan 505 as opposed to the Garmin Edge 1000. However, we currently live in the US, but we probably will move to Europe next year. It does not look like the Magellan has an SD card slot to install extra maps on. Could I buy the Magellan 505 now here in the US and install (free of charge) European cards on it when we move to Europe next year? If not, the Magellan would not be an alterative to me to the Garmin Edge 1000.

Honestly, how Garmin manages to sell products after the Edge 800 (or maybe 810) is beyond me. With every major release I can think of -- at least going back to the 705, which is now more than four years old -- there were bugs galore. As the devices are getting more "capable," the bugs seem to increase. Add to that, Garmin's support can be woeful, with them basically saying it's your problem because they don't have a solution

I understand your concern, but there is really not much alternatives if you need most or all of the functionalities that the Garmin 1000 has. The only one that comes close is the Magellan 505, but in my case, if there is no possibility to load other (European) maps on the device, it's useless to me.

I don't think you can swap maps.. You can wait and snag the Mio 505 once you get to where you are moving to however.. Not really a solution I know but it's an option at least..

Mio Cyclo 505 = Europe and the Magellan Cyclo 505 = North America if that helps anyone..

I had more issues with the Edge 1000 yesterday.. I honestly can't wait for my Cyclo 505 to arrive.. My Edge 1000 is going right on back to Garmin quickly! I will hold onto to it for a few days to compare the 2 units though..

I wrote Garmin last week about Segments not updating and here was their response to me:

Quote from email:

I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the Segments in Garmin Connect. Currently the leaderboards are not populating with any information due to the amount of server load this will create. We are working to get the Segment feature fully implemented and working as soon as possible. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Pretty sad that absolutely no one from Garmin thought that searching through millions of ride data and matching that up to thousands of segment data would cause the server to bog down..

My little Edge 200 was rock solid! My Edge 810 was a buggy hunk of junk. In the 810's defense, update 3.0 did finally solve the issues that I was having with it.. How long was the 810 out before it progressed to version 3.0 though? A year I think..

I am officially done, done, done with Garmin.. Here is Magellan's chance to convert me into their world and earn or lose a customer.

I've been continuing to do internet based research while I wait on the Cyclo 505 to arrive and while there are some complaints from users they are nowhere even close to the issues that the 1000 has..

One cool thing the Cyclo does is auto sync rides to Strava. You link your Magellan or Mio account with Strava and all your rides are automatically synced to Strava..

The Cyclo 505 does not have live track.. But then again neither does the Edge 1000 since BT is busted and constantly disconnects. The Cyclo does have an emergency feature where it will send your exact location to someone though. Not quite live track but still a nice feature to have.

I have not gotten a shipping notice from Clever Training yet but their website did say that it does not ship for 5-7 days. I assume they have none in stock and get them from Magellan as they are ordered..

Right, but when consider the functions most people actually use, when you really get down to it, everything's been there since the Edge 800 (or 705 if you were willing to do without the touchscreen). I personally couldn't care less about being able to connect my wireless device via Bluetooth for constant uploading to Garmin Connect. I mean, who really wants to track the average person -- except maybe the NSA :) And then they do things like they have with the 1000, where they actually remove a feature that people like, such as bike profiles. Many people have more than one bike who have an Edge and like being able to seamlessly track the bikes separately.

And with each new device, you suffer through a whole round of bugs until close to a year later, they get the firmware worked out. To me, you're safer with a device that's not being touched anymore and that delivers on its core functions.

Don't get me wrong, I think my 705 is one of the most useful gadgets I have. But it shouldn't be considered a tremendous innovation for a company whose core products are all GPS-enabled devices. One would think they would get something like that right. That's why it's doubly confusing to me that future products seem so buggy.

I hear ya on the 200. The reason I didn't through that one in, even though it was released since the 705, is the fact that it's feature set isn't really comparable to the 705 and beyond.

This is true for me.. I've never used live track, I have no interest in live track and I don't consider it a feature..

True.. The Cyclo 505 has profiles from what I can tell

This is the Garmin way.. I imagine a year from now the 1000 will actually work as advertised but by then Garmin will announce and release the Garmin Edge 1100 and it will start the process all over again..

i'm very interested to find out how readable is the cyclo 505 in daylight. I don't think the screen is sunlight readable like the Garmin 62s (handheld). So it will require that the backlight to be continously on?

Looigi 06-14-14 07:25 AM

FWIW, I'm a pretty average person and my wife likes to be able to track me when I go off for a ride. I don't need an 810 etc for that as I use the free Glympse app on my phone for live tracking. With the 810 etc, you still need the phone anyway.

My Cyclo 505 will be here this morning.. My mail usually arrives about 10am. A quick charge, software / firmware update and out the door with it I will go!

I should have some 1st ride impressions later today! :thumb:

raqball 06-14-14 03:29 PM

My Cyclo 505 came today.. Charged it up, the firmware was already updated, mounted it using the out front mount and went on a 38 mile ride.. My Cyclo 505 is paired to iPhone 5S and I am using the Garmin magnet less speed and cadence sensors. Also connected is a Garmin HR strap and the Shimano D-Fly for Di2

Setup of the Cyclo unit is very easy and intuitive.. Once setup you can tell your Magellan account to automatically and instantly sync your rides to a Strava account. This takes just a few seconds to get running and you only need to authorize this the 1st time. After that, it’s automatic. What happens is the ride is uploaded via Wifi to Magellan then Magellan automatically syncs the ride to your Strava account. If you are a Strava user, this is a nice touch!

The initial setup of the Cyclo (firmware update, setting up WiFi) must be done on a Windows PC. I use a Macbook Pro as my main computer but I do have a Windows PC upstairs in my sons room that I was able to use.. After the 1st setup, you can use a Mac for uploads, downloads ect. Magellan says Mac support is coming but it’s not here yet from what I can tell..

Initial thoughts on the Cyclo 505 -vs- Edge 1000:
  • Units both have a very nice 3” screen with the same resolution.
  • Cyclo has a nicer GUI (user preference as some might like the Edge 1000 GUI better)
  • Boots almost as fast as the Edge 1000
  • GPS is a tad bit slower to acquire signal than the Edge 1000
  • Out front mount is similar to the one included with the Edge 1000
  • Temperature is displayed in C and I find no way to change it to F on the Cyclo.
  • Di2 gearing for rear cassette only goes to 11-28. There is no 11-32 option.

During my ride with the Cyclo 505:
  • Bluetooth was rock solid on the Cyclo. No disconnects and no issues
  • All sensors stayed connected throughout the ride (speed, cadence, HR and Di2)
  • Maps and navigation are MUCH nicer on the Cyclo than on the Edge 1000
  • Screen on the Cyclo is a tad / hair bit slower to respond than the Edge 1000
  • No locked screen issues with the Cyclo like with the Edge 1000
  • The screen was easily readable in the bright desert sun

After my ride with the Cyclo 505:
  • Ride uploaded to the Magellan web via WiFi without issues
  • Ride automatically synced to Strava

I had no bugs or issues during my 1st ride with the Cyclo 505. It was a nice relief after the constant headaches, bugs, issues, and troubles that plague me with the Edge 1000.

The screen on the Cyclo is just as nice as the screen on the Edge 1000. They are both 3” and they have the exact same resolution. I had no issues reading the display in the bright desert sun during todays ride.

The Cyclo 505 has auto pause but there is not a speed adjustment setting for this like there is on the Edge 1000. I believe auto pause is activated when stopped or at zero mph..

There is no live track function on the Cyclo 505. It has an emergency feature that lets you send a message to someone with your exact location but live track, as it exists on the Edge 1000, is not a feature of the Cyclo 505.

The Edge 1000 lets you have 5 customizable screens whereas the Cyclo 505 only has 2 customizable screens.

There are no Segments on the Cyclo 505

There is no Laps feature on the Cyclo 505

Pricing:

The Edge 1000 bundle price is $699 whereas the Cyclo 505HC bundle price is $499. The non bundle versions of the devices sell for the following $599 for the Edge 1000 and $429 for the Cyclo 505.. That’s a HUGE difference in price and saving $170-$200 is nothing to sneeze at.

That $170-$200 savings is magnified even further when you consider that just about everything is broken on the Edge 1000 at the moment. Bluetooth is a disaster, WiFi is a mess, Segments are messed up, live track does not work and you constantly get a lock screen message where the unit is frozen and can’t be operated. Maps and navigation on the Edge 1000 are pretty bad as well. Add to that the fact that most text messages and phone alerts will never be received due to the constant BT drops and disconnects.

The new Garmin speed and cadence sensors are much nicer however and they are magnetless. Here is what I did: I purchased the Cyclo 505 non bundle version from Clever Training. I also purchased the Garmin magnetless speed and cadence sensors for $70.. I already have the Garmin HR so I didn’t need to order it. If you need the HR strap it’s another $70. So lets say you need to build the entire bundle.

Cyclo = $429 + Speed and Cadence = $70 + HR = $70 comes to $570 before the 10% discount. After the discount it’s down to $513 with no sales tax and free shipping.

You can basically mix and match a bundle for about $190 less than the Edge 1000 bundle price. If you already have a HR strap then the mix and match bundle gets ever cheaper.

By mixing and matching you get the better computer in the Cyclo 505 and you get the better magnetless Garmin sensors.. It’s a win-win and you’ve got some extra cash in your pocket!

If everything on the Edge 1000 worked as advertised would it be worth $699? Before the Cyclo 505 I would have said yes. Now that I’ve used the Cyclo 505 I’d have to say no. The Edge 1000, even if all it’s features worked is nowhere even close to being worth $200 more than the Cyclo 505. When you factor in the Edge 1000’s current status, it’s a no brainer..

  • **Live Track: Edge 5 — Cyclo N/A (has an emergency notification feature)
  • Auto Pause: Edge 9 — Cyclo 7
  • Laps: Edge 9 — Cyclo N/A
  • Out Front Mount: Edge 7 — Cyclo 7
  • Handlebar Mount: Edge 8 — Cyclo 2
** Indicates the function / feature is currently broken and / or full of bugs on the Edge 1000

The Cyclo 505 is missing a few features / functions that might be show stoppers for some.
  • There is no Live Track feature on the Cyclo
  • You can’t turn off Auto Pause with the Cyclo
  • There is no Laps feature on the Cyclo
  • There is no Segment feature on the Cyclo
  • There is no SD card slot on the Cyclo

Both units come with an out front mount and a handlebar mount. The out front mounts are similar. They don’t really put the unit ‘out front’ like a K-Edge will. Where the Edge 1000 shines is with the handlebar mount. The rubberband fastening system that Garmin uses is pretty awesome. The Cyclo 505 handlebar mount uses zip ties.. Yup, zip ties! Come on Magellan it’s 2014 and zip ties have seen their day come and go..

I do have an email in to K-Edge asking if they have any plans to make a out front mount for the Cyclo. If they respond I will be sure to post their response here in this thread.

Overall I’d give the $599-$699 Garmin Edge 1000 a total score of 3 out of 10. Yes it’s that bad.. Nothing works right now as advertised by Garmin.

Overall I’d give the $429-$499 Magellan Cyclo 505 a total score of 8 out of 10. Everything works as advertised so far. There are a few things I wish were different about it but I’d be nit picking. I’d like more custom screens and I’d like to have a different color option. While the white casing is not bad, I’d prefer a black casing..

I’ve only rode one day and I only went 38 miles with the Cyclo 505 but after dealing with the Edge 1000 for the past month, these were 38 glorious and trouble free miles. I received 3 text messages and one phone call notification during the ride. All seamlessly popped up on my Cyclo 505.. I had zero sensor issues, BT was rock solid and the ride uploaded at the end without issue..

For tomorrows ride I am going to follow a 46 mile GPS track that I made and downloaded to the Cyclo. The cool thing about this, if it works, is that during the track it will tell you how far to your next climb, what the elevation of that climb is and it even will tell you the grade of the next climb.. Cool!

On Monday I am going to try the Surprise Me feature and see how that goes. The Surprise Me feature lets you put in a distance and it will then calculate 3 different routes for that milage. You then preview these routes which shows the total elevation for that route ect. You then choose the route you want and the Cyclo will navigate you through it.. A cool way to find new rides / routes in your area..

Great review. U mention that the screen is very readable in the bright daylight - does the backlight have to be enabled? What power settings has the backlight have to be on for it to be readable - what backlight setting were u on? Does the backlight setting switch off automatically (i assume this might be the case to save power) or is it constantly on - which would help navigation. Imagine what it will be like if the backlight was off and you come across a tricky turn and u have to take your hands off the handlebar to activate the backlight!!!!!!

My brightness slider is set pretty low. I believe the slider has 14 positions and mine is at position 4..

The backlight can be set to never turn off or to turn off at 5 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute, 45 seconds, 30 seconds or 15 seconds. I have mine set to turn off after 15 seconds to conserve battery power. Even with the backlight off the screen is very readable in sunlight..

There is also a screen lock that can be set to lock the screen after Never, 20 minutes, 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute or 30 seconds. I have mine set to never because I don't want the screen to lock.

There is also a auto power off timer and it can be set to Never, 60 minutes, 45 minutes, 30 minutes, 20 minutes, 15 minutes or 10 minutes. I have mine set to never because I do not want the until powering down until I tell it to..

Yes if the screen goes dim and you enter a tunnel or something like that you would need to remove your hand from the handlebar to active / light the screen back up. This is the same with the Edge 1000..

i checked it out at a bike shop and found that with the backlight off the unit is pretty much unreadable. Maybe it was late in the day and the setting sun was quite low? I did angle it towards the sun and it did get better but it was still kind of dark.....definitely not brilliant or bright. So my conclusion is that the back light is required. That's the same with the Garmins right?

raqball 06-15-14 07:49 AM

Nope. Mid day and in bright sunlight.. I had my Edge 1000 setup the about the same as far as brightness and screen timeout goes..

Today, I will adjust the brightness levels during my ride and see how that goes.. For the 1st half of my ride I will set brightness at the mid way point on the slider and keep it set to turn off after 15 seconds. At my mid ride point I will crank the brightness to full and set it to never turn off..

I will report back later.

This morning I attempted to connect the Garmin magnet less speed and cadence sensors with the Cyclo 505. No dice!

After about 10 minutes I gave up and put the old Garmin speed/cadence back on that I used yesterday.

I sent a message via Twitter before my ride explaining the issue and asked if the new Garmin magnet less sensors are compatible with the Cyclo.

Here is the response that was awaiting me when I returned: (and on a Sunday non the less)

This is an issue with all Cyclo devices which have been updated to the v4 firmware. There will be a new firmware version coming out in the next few weeks which will resolve the problem. In the meantime please disconnect the sensors from the device.
Bummer that the new sensors won’t work for a few weeks until they release a software fix but massive props for the honest and fast response..

Hey Garmin, did you see how that worked? They admitted the problem, they responded quickly and they gave me a time frame on when the issue will be resolved..

The Edge 1000 has been out for over a month now and Garmin has said little to nothing! All we have are 2 sticky posts. One addresses the ‘locked screen’ issue and says a fix is a few weeks away. That post was a month ago. Maybe in Garmin’s world a few weeks is a month and counting but not in mine.. The other response from Garmin was in the other sticky which says they are aware of the BT issues that happen within the 1st few miles. Seriously? It’s not just within the 1st few miles and there is no time frame given for the fix.

Had Garmin been honest, upfront and if they actually appeared to care about the issues and their customers, I probably would have stuck the issues out and stayed with the Edge 1000..

I am not thrilled my magnet less sensors won’t work on the Cyclo for a few weeks but I am, for now at least, satisfied that I matter to them as a customer and that they are in fact aware of the issue and working to fix it..

So that’s my update for today.. Bravo Magellan and shame on you Garmin.

My ride today went well. No disconnects and no issues at all again today. I had 2 text messages and no phone calls.. The 2 text message popped up without issue, I read them while pedaling and since they were unimportant, i pedaled on..

I followed a track that went 46 miles and it worked great! The coolness factor is that when following a track it does indeed tell you the distance to the next climb, the elevation and the grade of the climb. Pure awesome! There is also a pretty little graphic above the stats thats shows where you are and the elevation behind and in front of you.. Awesomeness!

I did go off course to test the rerouting. It worked just fine and I threw a few curveballs at it.. After I went off course it nagged me to make a u-turn for about 500 feet or so. After that it recalculated again and told me to turn right. I went left instead to throw a monkey wrench at it. It recalculated and I followed it's suggestions for a few turns. At one of the turns it wanted me to go right so I went left, another curveball. No problem, it recalculated again. Following the directions I was back on course in no time.. Overall I was very impressed with this feature today…

The ride uploaded via WiFi without issue and it auto sync to Strava as well..

A few other observations.

If the Edge 1000 is turned off and you plug it in to charge the unit boots up. You then turn it off to let it charge. Once it’s charged and you unplug it, it boots back up and now you have to turn it off again. Seriously Garmin?

If the Cyclo is turned off and you plug it in to charge it stays turned off and simply charges. When you unplug it after it’s charged it stayes off.. This is what you expect to happen.

I have no idea why the Edge 1000 does what it does. I seriously hope they did not intend this and that’s it’s just another issue to add to the already rather long list of Edge 1000 bugs..

Super duper cool features discovered today!

If you are in the large chainring and you shift into the large cog (a big no-no) the Cyclo starts beeping at you! I did this 3 different times and each time I shifted out of the large rear cog the beeping stopped. I guess it a ‘hey boss you know you are in gears that you should not be right’ kinda thing. At any rate it’s a nice touch to the Di2 integration.

Also and this is HUGE… When I got home I looked at my K-Edge XL just sitting there looking all sad. For fun I plopped the Cyclo on it and guess what? It fits!

I then fastened the K-Edge XL to my bike, attached the Cyclo and tested it out. I was also to grab the Cyclo by it’s body and lift the front end of the bike off the ground so it’s a pretty good fit..

I don’t recommend anyone try this just yet on a ride however as I am more than happy to to test it out. I’d hate to see someones Cyclo go bouncing down the road because I said it fit.. For tomorrows ride I am going to test it..

Thanks again for the very detail review - u should consider writing reviews professionally?.......let us know of any further opinions. I like how u said the unit was able to warn of impending uphills....wow...exactly what a lot of us need!!!!

This is a pretty awesome feature of the Cyclo.. But it could be depressing information depending on the climb that's ahead.. :p

Also, I did some more digging re: using a Garmin mount and I guess the Cyclo 505 can indeed use them.. I am pretty happy that I can use my K-Edge XL with the Cyclo and get the uint in a real 'out front' position.. :thumb:

raqball 06-16-14 04:09 PM

I was going to use the Surprise Me feature today but it's not really a feature I'd ever use. I have 8 routes that I ride all the time and they have varying distance and elevation. I decide what I want to do for the day then I just hit one of these routes. If anyone wants me to test the Surprise Me, I will gladly do so..

I had someone on another forum message me and asked me to test the Cyclo without any sensors, so today I did just that. I took a 38 mile route that I know well. I know where mile marker 5 is, 12 is, 23 is and 33 is along this route. I removed my speed and cadence sensor and didn't wear my HR. I did however leave the Di2 D Fly connected.

GPS data for distance was accurate. At my 5 mile marker, the Cyclo nailed it. The rest of the mile markers were pretty darn close to what RidewithGPS, MapMyRide and Strava all say.. Speed is a hard one to gauge but I'd say it was also pretty accurate..

No issues whatsoever again today. Thats 3 days in a row error free and about 120'ish miles on the Cyclo.. Today I had one text message and zero phone calls. The one text displayed with no issue. After the ride it uploaded and synced to Strava without issue..

I tested the K-Edge XL today with the Cyclo and while it does work just fine, it does not give you that warm and fuzzy clicked in feeling. You know, when you click into the mount you can feel and hear when it's locked in? The K-Edge XL with the Cyclo attached did not give me that feeling.

The included out front mount that comes with the Cyclo does give you this clicked in warm and fuzzy.. I decided to just use the included Cyclo's out front mount for now. It does not put the unit out front as far as I'd like, but it is secure..

Someone also asked about readability in bright sunlight. Today I stopped and took this photo. This is out where there is no shade whatsoever. Brightness was turned all the way down to zero and the screen was off. Bright desert sun, not a cloud in the sky and about 98 degrees when I snapped the photo:

A little off topic, but Garmin released a new firmware 2.3. I wouldn't hold my breath, but hopefully it resolves some of the issues people have been seeing with firmware 2.2.

raqball 06-19-14 04:00 PM

Ya I saw that.. With Garmin it's always 2 steps forward and one step back.. I assume the new update will resolve a few issues.

Heck the 810 has been out for over a year and it's still buggy..

I returned the Edge 1000 and the Edge Remote to Garmin and got back $806 with tax. I spent $386 on the Cyclo and $63 on the garmin magnetless sensors = $449 total with free shipping and no sales tax from Clever Training. That's a $357 difference.. NO THANKS Garmin.... The Cyclo 505 is just a good, if not better than the Edge 1000. The Cyclo is also pretty much bug and error free..

Here are a few shots of the Cyclo 505 with the included Magellan Out Front Mount. The 1st shot again shows the screen readability in bright sunlight (brightness set to 0) and also shows the Di2 information.

http://s17.postimg.org/irt3d3qbz/IMG_0084.jpg

A few additional items worth noting.
  • The Cyclo 505 has music control -- I assume this would be great for mountain bikers ect who don't need to worry about cycling in traffic with headphones in. It's not a feature that I'd use but it is there for those who want it.
  • I do not think the Cyclo uses 1 second GPS recording and I've found nowhere to view or change this setting.
  • There is no iPhone app. The Cyclo 505 pairs directly to iPhone with no need for an app. There is an app for Android and it's needed to get text and phone notification with that specific OS.
  • The Garmin Connect website is much nicer and is far more advanced than Magellan's version of the same. I have auto sync setup with Strava so I never need to go to the Magellan web portal.
  • The fonts are slightly smaller on the Cyclo 505 -v- the fonts on the Edge 1000.
The one and only thing I am finding that I really miss from the Edge 1000 is the Edge Remote. I really liked that little thing!

I do have 3 bugs to report on the Cyclo 505
  • The Garmin magnetless sensors don't connect. Magellan said a fix is on the way with a 2 week time frame
  • Temperature is only displayed in Celsius
  • Di2 rear cassette settings is missing an 11-32 option

That's it.. Other than that the Cyclo 505 is ROCK solid and everything just flat out works on the unit.

@raqball, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post the reviews. The Magellan Cyclo 505 looks interesting. With everything that has been said by you and the others I don't think I'd be running out to buy a Garmin 1000 until at least next year. I'm not currently in the market for a GPS device but if I were I would certainly consider the Magellan 505. The only thing I don't like about the Magellan is the white side stripe. I know it's petty but what can I say. It's just not as good looking as the Garmins. Of course I'm primarily a function-over-form kind of person anyway so I'd likely go with what works best and shrug off the white side panels. After a while you forget about that kind of stuff anyway as long as everything works. Heck, if it bothered me that much I could just put some black electrical tape over it and call it a day.

I would also consider a Garmin 800 or 810. As long as the updates have removed the bugs I'd consider one of those as well. Magellan though has one big thing in their favor; They are the least expensive. My pockets aren't as deep as some so for me this is a major issue.

No problem.. Garmin has always been able to put out a shoddy product and get away with it because they were the only game in town for a high end cycling computer. With the Cyclo 505, that's changed and it's a very viable competitor to the Edge 1000.

As far as price goes yes I can't believe the difference. My refund for the Edge 1000, the Edge Remote and sales tax came to $806. The Cyclo 505 was $386 and the magnet-less sensors were $63 for a grand total of $449. I saved $357 with the Cyclo 505 combo -v- The Edge 1000 and the Cyclo is the better computer.. Unbelievable how Garmin gets away with it, but I think their time of being able to do so is about up..

The white casing of the Cyclo is growing on me but I'd also prefer a black casing..

Also DCRainmaker said that the Laps feature is coming to the Cyclo

The lap piece is coming down the road in a future firmware, No doubt that I see them as Garmin’s biggest competitor.
He does not give a timeframe however for laps to make their way onto the Cyclo...
