HRM + GPS Watch?

Hello,

I would like to get the collective's opinion on a HRM+GPS watch like the TomTom or Nike products. No chest strap. I already use Strava for logging, and would like to be able to see my speed and heart rate. The phone stays in my pocket. I could add an ANT+ HRM and display but by the time get both I might as well get a watch, no?

I would like to have speed and HR visible because I'm a very late starter in the cycling field (54) and have a few extra pounds (a few? :innocent:). I can currently do 10 miles at around 8.5 mph on a trail (mild but annoying slopes). Lots of trails around us, road cycling not a possibility for now (once I get some experience we can think about it). I started cycling 6 weeks ago and 10 miles is not a problem at 8 mph - heck, I can do twice that, but shouldn't I be trying tp push harder?

My standard routine is 2.5 miles on 'pavement style trails' where you really can't go more than 10-12 mph due to cross streets, houses, traffic lights, pedestrians, etc and 2.5 miles on a really nice trail we have in my hometown - recreational use only, shaded, very nice. (5 miles one way, 10 total). Eventually I can migrate more of my cycling to the trail (i.e. drive to the trail then cycle).

So, as I work my numbers for speed up I'd like to (a) see my speed and (b) see my heart rate to make sure I don't overdo it. Is the HRM useful for that or just go very slowly etc or check with my doctor and see what he says in terms of acceptable heart rate based on my medical history... In any case I'll likely need an HRM, no?

Apologies for the lengthy post! any help will be appreciated.

If you're going to get an HRM get one with a chest strap, the ones without don't work very well.

I checked to see what Strada works with and saw they have a cute bicycle computer and equally cute chest strap HRM both from Wahoo... That should do it then, and lower cost than getting yet another watch!
