Any CREE Q5 users here? Any mounts for ROAD BIKE handlebars?
 

I bought this thing last year and I haven't found a reason to use it until now. All I have right now is the flashlight itself and a mount that will only work on MTB handlebars.

Any mounts for 31.8 road handlebars?

anyone?

How about posting a link to the light, pictures, diameter of the light, anything?

Cree Q5 tells us only the emitter manufacturer, Cree, and the flux bin, Q5. It doesn't tell us anything about the device into which the LED is installed, or even the model of the emitter.

That being said, the 2Fish LockBlock, and its generic clones, work reasonably well for mounting flashlights to bicycle handlebars. There's a lot of room for improvement, but they're the best I've yet found in five years of looking (on and off).

It uses a 18650 battery which I also don't have. That mount costs around $10-15 already.

Honestly I don't know if I should bother with it since I got my eyes on a Lezyne Macro.

That host is pretty generic. I've got one (without an emitter) in a box somewhere that I've never used. There's nothing wrong with it, but you'll probably have trouble optimizing it for your needs compared to a P60 host.

Generic versions of the mount are less than $2, if you're willing to wait two or three weeks for delivery. (I PMed a link.)

I can't see the emitter clearly enough to determine what model it is.

Single cell 18650 lights offer great versatility, and that's the cell size for which the latest li-ion cell technologies first appear.

One of the advantages of using flashlights versus lights designed specifically designed for bikes is that they can be easily and inexpensively modified and optimized for your individual needs. You can have control over brightness, color temperature, color rendering index, beam shape, and battery life. As a general rule, you get much more bang for your buck by using flashlights.

It might be worth getting the 18650 battery and charger even if you don't use it much on your bike. You might like to have a decent flashlight for general household use.

You could always put it on your helmet.

And skip the cheap chargers and batteries, the quality control is pretty spotty with them (if there is any at all) and you'll get better results by spending a little more.

I now realized how important these flashlights are on trails. I hit up one today and it's cloudy. Not having a reliable front lights isn't the way to go.

Sorry to be picky but any EBay sellers? I'm apprehensive in giving my CC with AliExpress.

I did a quick search and I only see the Ultrafire ones.

Has anybody here had any reason to worry about their credit card with Ali Express? I've been buying from them for a year and a half, bought hundreds of items and never had a problem. It's much safer than buying from ebay - if your purchase doesn't come, you get a refund. If it's damaged or not as described, you open a dispute and if the dispute is legit you get a refund. Your money goes into escrow and the seller doesn't get paid until you confirm everything is ok or the dispute is settled. I've heard of many horror stories from ebay, and experienced a few myself. Most, if not all of the Chinese sellers on ebay also sell on Ali, the prices are generally higher on ebay though, and you have to pay for shipping much more often.

Kantoboy - I'm using a light almost exactly like the one you have, with a Xtar SP2 charger, and in-line mount on my stem just as Elvo pointed out above. The only extra to add is rubber bands or nicer looking O-rings pulling the light down to the stem itself for greater stability. (put inner tube under the light to control height/angle and keep from scratching everything.) We have also used the LockBlocks, which are better than the cheap generic ones, but you may have a little trouble with them tilting after a number of bumps. NBD, just move it back.

Candlepowerforums does have a biking section, but the cheap chinese budget lights are forbidden on CPF because that site is funded by the flashlight makers.

At any rate, there is MUCH more information available on CPF regarding specific emitters, batteries, modding, etc., and that's the useful stuff.

I haven't looked at CPF for a while, but BLF has way more than what I need for technical details.

Ok well I ended up buying from Ali with my MC.

I got another flashlight which is the SK98 for when I use my roadbike. I think it's "smallish" enough.

There's no reason not to check out both. I was just pointing out that CPF is far more comprehensive, much like BikeForums.net, compared to most other bicycle related Internet forums.

As far as I know Fenix bc35r and bc25r both with an asymmetrical beam can be modified since it has a fairly popular XHP50A and XP-G3 emitters. On Fenix bc35r the amber diffusers have to be plucked out to access the screws, while Fenix bc25r only requires prying the side grips. Had to reflow some SST-20 2700k ( measured 3300k) 95CRI emitter in a bc25r which is used as a low beam with a DIY remote tactile switch added and XHP50A 3000k (measured 3200k) 90CRI in a bc35r used as a high beam due to it's flashing capability. The original emitters had an apparent sickly purplish tint to them while the center part was almost monochromatic yellow in bc25r. Seems like dedoming/shaving the SST-20 in bc25r made upper part of layered beam narrower and brighter, while in a bc35r there wasn't any distinct changes, no way to tell without proper measurements.
Was thinking about Busch and Mueller but since it is using Osram Oslon Black Flat which comes in cool white only then had to abandon the idea. The other one which can certainly be modified was Specialized Flux Evo, but seems like the cut-off wasn't as sharp, separate high/low beams are always better and it wasn't as easily available.
