According to what I learned from the kickstart video, this is not true. Rims won't be detected. This gadget sends a signal that the sensor in the ground is looking for. There isn't enough metal in the bicycle to reflect the signal coming from the system in the ground.

Or do I understand it wrong?

Seems that the campaign is ending far away from its funding goal.

Being Illegal it may trigger the flashing Red and Blue lights of the Gendarmes pulling you over and writing a 'notice to appear' citation.

Shouldn't be anything illegal about the proposed kickstarter device. It's only triggering the sensor that should already be triggered by your bicycle if it had been set to the proper sensitivity, and E&M emissions from the device should be low enough to be within the FCC limits. But I'm not surprised by the lack of funding. Too expensive and too bulky to be appealing to many cyclists.

The Mirt device mentioned in an earlier comment is illegal when used by non-emergency personnel since it triggers an immediate change in the light so police/fire/ambulance can more safely go through intersections in an emergency situation.
