Loading Free Map on Garmin 800

I just received my Garmin 800 without maps included. I created a map file using openstreetmap. The img file size is 21M, the gmap file is 23M. Do I HAVE to buy an SD card to load these files? Is there a directory where I can load directly on the 800? I've only done this once before on my garmin hiking 64s gps and it's been a while.

Just get a microSD. They're dirt cheap these days.

fine, if it's required - just hoping I could do this at home this morning without having to schlep to the store or order online.

You could load a very small map on the device memory.

I called Garmin and was told that I could load up to 100M on the device itself. I had a file just under 100M and I could not load it. I reduced the map size to 30M and it loaded fine and worked without effort. That covers me for my county and good enough for now ...
