New Garmin Models When?
I'm a new cyclist and I've used my phone this year with Strava and Map My Ride. I keep hearing about the importance of cadence and heart rate monitoring and I'm eying a Garmin - the 510 Performance Bundle specifically. Just curious though if there is any word if new models will be introduced like at CES or something in a few months? Maybe a price drop on the current models if so even if they aren't to die for.

I pulled the trigger on the 510. From what (relatively little actually) I have read it looks like it takes them a good year to get the firmware ironed out on these things. Hopefully I won't be disappointed by some revolutionary new models coming out in the next few months. So far I'm pretty impressed while I'm getting acquainted with it. Only been able to ride with it once so far. Should be insightful and helpful hopefully.

The 510, 810 & 1000 were all released within the last 2 years, given the 500 is still selling, not seeing any replacements for these in the new future. The 200 is looking long in the tooth. As #Fastfwd01 notes, it takes Garmin a year or so to sort all the firmware bugs out, so the 510 would be worth looking at now.

unfortunately, it seems really unlikely that Garmin will introduce anything that is significantly better than their current offerings. I bought an 800 after the 810 came out, and I'm really happy with my decision

I was disappointed with the last offerings. The 500 pricing was acceptable for me. The 510 is a rip off and the 200 lacked cadence. Hence, the 500 is still popular.

You can pair a heart rate monitor and even a cadence monitor to your smartphone! I'm brand spanking new at this and haven't done so yet (I plan to), but wanted to throw out there that that capability exists. You might also splurge and get ANT+/Bluetooth dual band sensors (or just ANT+ and an ANT+ adapter for your smartphone), so they'll work with your smartphone now, and when you pull the trigger on a Cycle computer, will work with those as well. (From what I've read, even the Bluetooth capable computers only work with ANT+ sensors, the bluetooth functionality is just to pair it to your phone.)

I agree that these are exceptionally expensive, but the 510 seemed to be the best *value* amongst the current offerings. For me anyway. Still, yes, very expensive.
