Andalucia?

We are considering a vacation/holiday in Andalucia next spring (March).

Any suggestions on which areas are most bicycle friendly for road cycling?

The best area for variety, scenery etc is probably around Ronda and Grazalema. Lots of variety of routes, pretty quiet roads if you stay of the highways, but there are a lot of hills. Another possibility would be in the Alpujarras between Granada and The Med. Lots of facilities towards the Western end (and close enough for visits to Granada and the coast. If you've any other questions, get in touch, I've cycled most parts of Andalucia over the years!

Thanks for the reply!

This is not going to be a cycling trip, it will be a trip with (I hope) two or three rides on the side. Our destination is not 100% finalized but likely staying 3-4 days each in Seville and Granada. I am hoping there is reasonable cycling not too far away, my concern is that if like usa the "good" cycling is far from the metropolitan areas...since time on the bike is time away from my wife, I would want to minimize travel time and maximize riding time. I will check the map and get back to you with specifics.

I have limited experience in Andalusia, but based on what I know, I'd second what PokerPaul says above. In particular, there's a lovely road NW of Ronda heading over the hills from Grazalema and down to Zahara - a real treat - but many of the roads around there are quite nice, and quiet. A plus for that route is that you can swim in the lake at the end (temperature permitting, obviously). I was there in August, and crucially was able to find enough water to keep going (it's hot in the summer!) but in March, I guess this will bother you less. The hills NW of Seville (e.g. around Zufre, and Arroyomolinos de Leon) were completely deserted when I was there. Another one if you're into wild swimming after your ride is the Cascadas de Huezna, NE of Seville but beware, the water there is COLD - but just what you want if it's a hot day. Enjoy!

I have rode from Rota Naval Air Station to Arcos de la Frontera a couple times. Nice 120 or so KM mile round trip. There is also a section of pave in Jerez if you are up for a challenge.
Santa Maria and Cadiz are also nice side trips.

Granada will be easier to get out by road bike than Seville. The area right out of Seville is rather flat.
Some killer climbs right out of Granada, you can climb up to 3000 meters... not so sure if you'll be able to do it in March, though. It may be frozen up there!
Check out wikiloc for more routes.

Grazalema/Ronda is also great, but a bit out of the way if you are going to be based off Sevilla and Granada.

FWIW, I'm doing long range planning for a trip which will be based out of Orgiva.

Light credit card touring with some adventure/gravel along the Sierra Nevada Road.
Input would be welcomed.

I'm staying 10 days in Nerja with family in late February. I'll have my bike with me.

Some help from you is appreciated: would you ride these? are the roads ok for a road bike?

Shorter route plans:
Nerja - Frigiliana - Torrox - Nerja (MA-5105)
Nerja - Frigiliana - Torrox - Competa - Algarrobo - Algarrobo-Costa - Torrox Costa - Nerja (MA-5105, A-7207, A-7206, N-340)

Is there a way to go through to El Rescate if I take MA-170 (in between Nerja and Motril) North? Is the road completely unrideable with 23mm tyres?

I'd like to start some ride from Motril to eg. Reservoir and Beznar lakes. How easy it is to get the bike to a bus?

Here's a 165 km route around Sierras de Tejeda. Any segment you'd change?

Toured Andalucía for nearly 7 weeks back in 2000. Giant clockwise loop starting and ending in Sevilla. Passed through Nerja during my time on the coast. Headed back inland at Torre del Mar.
