Lisbon to Sintra by bicycle?

Does anybody know of safe road routes from central Lisbon to Sintra? Looking at routes people have done on Strava, I can see that it's possible, but there are some postings I've seen (e.g., on TripAdvisor) saying that the roads are dangerous.

Just based on miles, it looks like a nice day trip there and back, but I don't want to be on roads with poor shoulders and lots of traffic.

I'd be renting a bicycle in central Lisbon (bikeiberia, I think?) Are there other options) in the next week - probably just before Christmas

Sintra is beautiful, but I can't imagine riding bikes at the destination. Lots of traffic once you arrive, and lots of hills and crowds.

Can't help on a route, I took the train both times.

In the end, I didn't go to Sintra. (Well, I've been there before - by train - but I didn't go on this trip.) I rented a cx bike and rode up to parque forestal de montana (the big park NW of the main city) and had a blast. Riding the main streets in central Lisbon was a challenge - both because of the traffic and because of the paving and the ubiquitous trolley tracks - but not too scary.

I've seen Strava and ridewithgps rides where people did the route from Lisbon to Sintra, but from talking to people I've realized that they do this at a time of very low traffic - say, dawn on a Sunday morning. I agree that it would be fairly treacherous in the middle of the day.
