Holland 'Let me buy you a bike and camping gear' service.

I had this idea. Not sure if anyone would be interested. But it goes like this.

1. You want to do a cycle tour in Europe.
2. But you don't bring your own bike and kit.
3. I buy you a bike and camping gear.
4. You pay all costs
5. You pick it up completely ready
6. When you fly back home you sell your bike and kit to me or yourself

A complete bike and camping kit would be 300-400
I will always give you back half the cost.
So basically you spend 200 Euro top.

What is the difference between that and renting the equipment?

The difference is it includes full camping gear with panniers. A bike you rent comes with nothing. You still would have to bring everything. Or spend a full day buying your outfit without knowing where to find the best deals.

So it could be a way to get cheap last minute flights.
Or for people who initially weren't planning on a cycle tour but once here change their mind.

Of course most will prefer their own trusted bicycle and plan their trip in advance.

Also when you rent the equipment, you have to bring it back. When you buy you can sell it in anywhere you like.

What kind of bike and camping gear am I getting for 300-400EUR?

My tent, stove, and sleeping gear cost close to $300 alone, and while quality it is hardly top of the line. Not much money left for the bike and bags.

It won't be brand new carbon Colnago. Rather a steel frame 21 speed mountain bike or hybrid. The older the better in fact. For 150 Euro it is well possible to buy a used one and have it ride like new. With new chain, cassette, cables etc. I fix bikes and are very picky to how good a bike should be. The costumer can decide what we buy and what to change. I might even give the bike a custom paint job. I'm gonna take it apart anyhow for a full overhaul. Personally I like and old mountain bike with city bars. One that was of high quality but is now on sale for 30 Euro or something. But if someone wants a more racy bike that is possible too. Not my recommendation though. Few world travelers use them.

That leaves 150 for camping gear. Depending on the time of year you don't need a sleeping bag capable of Arctic temperatures. Tents same thing. Doesn't have to be a Hilderberg for polar expeditions. Of course it won't be rubbish! We're just trying to get bargains. Partly new and partly used. After a while I will have plenty in stock to choose from. The idea is most will be returned to me. That will be my profit.

Suppose someone from the USA takes a plane. He or she then needs to buy some items themselves. First they don't know where to look. Then they don't have the time to search for the best deals. While I can look out for a suited bike and camping gear well in advance. And each time the costumer will buy it themselves. The difference is we will have it send to me so I can add it to the kit. Much I will already have. I have two light tents I don't use. Self inflating mattresses. Cooking gear. Or how about maps and routes? Or a sim for your internet?

At my place the last adjustments can be made to the bike and gear. The next morning you're ready to roll.

I have experience. I know what to get for a cycle tour through Europe. It should be light, complete, comfortable, but also affordable. A no-worry about kit. In case your mattress or sleeping bag isn't quite to your liking, you replace it somewhere along the way. Imagine you bring a much to hot sleeping bag you will have to carry it the whole trip. People may bring some of the kit with them. But the idea is you can leave everything anywhere you want if you return home. For example you fly to Amsterdam and end up in Rome where you hop on a last minute flight. Of course I hope you will bring everything back to me so I can give you back half of your money and add all the stuff to my collection.

Of course most people want to bring their own bike and gear. I have no experience in how things work at airports. What you pay and what time you spend on get it all on the plane to your destination. Perhaps it is easier then I think it is.

It is really not that bad of an idea.

My wife and I are flying into Amsterdam for a two week ride up the Rhine river. Although we are bringing all of our own camping gear we do plan on buying a cheap steel bike for her to use while we are there. I am bringing my own bike as I am staying for three months to do the Rhine, Danube and Elbe river routes, and wanted my own bike and gear for that long of a stay.

For a couple of week tour buying/reselling a bike setup is cheaper than paying for airline prices on the bikes and gear.

Pity I don't live in or near Amsterdam airport. It would make business much easier.
Of course there are plenty bike rentals. And you can buy a cheap bike and fix what needs to be fixed. But it would be nice to have one ready to go waiting for you the moment you arrive just as you want it to be. A typical Dutch cyclist has a town bike with large bags and basket. You could basically hop on without having to take a taxi or public transport. Taxi drivers at Schiphol are not exactly the individuals you want to meet first.

And maybe I can help you find a bike for sale, or rent, already. There must be people who came up with the same idea.
It kind of depends what you are planning to do. Are you going to use the bike to get around in Amsterdam? Or do you want to go touring fully loaded?

Well it is the country of bicycles. It won't be too much of a problem to quickly find one for your wife. The best way to see the city and country.

Look on Facebook. Bike - Second Hand Bikes, Used Bicycles - Amsterdam

or
www macbike.nl

Not sure what their prices are. A decent bike for town shouldn't cost more then 50-60 Euro. For example I'm selling a single speed. New front rack, tires, dingdong bell, battery lights, chain. 60 Euro. It's perfect. Nobody wants it!!!

Or a Giant 21 speed touring bike. If I put a new chain and cassette on and new cables, I would ask 90-100 Euro. You can even choose handlebars and saddle.
But I'm not in Amsterdam.

There's a fair amount of trust involved in this proposal and I'm not sure too many people are that trusting.

Just as an aside if anyone is thinking of doing maybe 1. 2. or 3 weeks in Brittany or the general area there's a company that specialises in traditional cycle touring based in Gouarec in the centre of Brittany who rent bikes and the complete camping equipment including Trangia cooking gear at what are very reasonable rates. I first used them back in 2001 and again this year when my son wanted to accompany me on a cycle tour but lacked the essentials.
