A road cyclist friend and I are planning a one-week bike trip to Europe in May. This will be our third such trip. Rather than moving from town to town with someone transporting our luggage, we like to have a home base city surrounded by a good network of secondary roads for these trips.
In 2009, we stayed in Avignon, France, and rode around the Côtes du Rhône region. A couple of years later, we stayed in San Gimignano, Italy, and rode around Tuscany.
Here are our requirements:
- High probability of sunny weather and daytime highs above 20 degrees Celcius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) in the month of May— After enduring a Canadian winter, we want sun and warmth
- Primarily flat or rolling hills — We want to ride about 80-100 km per day, allowing us to see a lot of a region. We don’t want to spend 1.5 hours climbing one mountain.
- We don’t want suburbs — once we leave our home base town, we want to be on quiet roads in beautiful countryside.
- After our daily rides, we want our home base town to be a nice place to explore with good restaurant options — After all, we need to refuel for the next day’s ride.
So, where would you recommend based on this list of requirements?
