Cycling routes across northern Italy, Slovenia and into Croatia

I'm planning a road-cycling adventure for next year; not a tour, but a 7-day series of daily workout adventures on the road bike to explore new places. I'm seeing beautiful areas of northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia that get my attention and would love to hear from other cyclist with reflections, feedback, route suggestions, local customs and cautions, lodging recommendations, and more. So i ask you, if I had the good fortune of cycling with one of you, where in your corner of northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia would we cycle? Tell me about your favorite cycling places and why I should think about cycling in your hometown and surrounding areas. My idea is to explore places about which I have no real knowledge or preconceived notions and expectations that could influence the experience. This approach, to my thinking, would add greatly to the discovery process of the adventure.

Advanced thanks for all the great ideas.

    Cheers

    Hello motmcd,
Croatia is a great country for cycling, on the road or in the nature. If you are visiting Italy and Slovenia, the closest part of Croatia is Istra. Istra is a very beautiful place, full of bike paths, and cool places to visit. On this link you can see some of the trails in Istra.

But, if you wanna explore more in Croatia, Im recommending you to visit:
Rijeka a cool little city, full of history and great places to ride,
Zadar also a great town, full of history. Before Zadar, I highly recommended you to visit lakes Plitvice https://www.google.hr/search?q=lakes...w=1366&bih=622 .It is a great place to visit and ride but it is little crowded in the summer.
Also, you can visit Split and Dubrovnik. I`m planning a little bike tour this summer through the Croatia, so maybe I can join you on your adventure, show you around, acquaint you with our culture...If you have any question about Croatia, feel free to ask me, I would love to help you.
And dont be afraid, Croatia is a safe place

Btw, here is a plan for my bike adventure.

Unfortunately I haven't spent much time in Northern Italy, but will offer what I know.

One area I still want to ride is in the Dolomites. Check the first 2 rides listed in the following link http://www.cycling-challenge.com/dol...-trip-summary/

Where I have been fortunate to spend a couple of days is around Bormio back in 2012. Climbs 4-8 in the above link cover some classic climbs around the town.

Day one - Both sides of the Stelvio http://climbinglama.blogspot.com.au/...lvio-18th.html

Day two - Mortirolo Gavia loop day two http://climbinglama.blogspot.com.au/...avia-19th.html

I stayed at the Alpi&Golf hotel in town. Quite a nice little family run hotel - they kindly let me have a very late check out so I could shower after riding before heading in the car back to Milan for my flight.

No worries. Sorry I couldn't offer more info.If the question was about the French Alps that would be another story...

Will be following this thread to see what other suggestions you get. Also keen to read about your trip when you've gone there!

Hey Ruzo, how far is Medjugoria from you? What do you think road cycling would be like in that area? Advanced thanks for the feedback.

Distance between Rijeka and Medjugorje is about 350 km or 217 miles. Medjugorje is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but not to far from Croatian border. I really don't know much about road cycling in Medjugorje, but I can ask few friends about that. I know that they have some awesome trails for mountain biking, and my advice to you is that if you are going there, you should visit Split or Dubrovnik, they are not too far and they are great places for cycling. Distance between Split and Medjugorje is about 150 km, but believe me, that is a great place to visit. If you have more questions about cycling there, feel free to ask me.
    Cheers, and greeting's from Croatia

Let me know if you follow through with plans to cycle Philadelphia.

    You are welcome.
I will definitely let you know, BTW I checked that Bamba Facebook page that you told me about here. It seems like a great and very friendly group of people. I asked them few questions over the Facebook, and answers were very useful. That place is a definitely one of my stops during my bike adventure through Philadelphia.
And I check over the Google, you have some great downhill trails there, very interesting place to visit.

    Cheers.

Reading has been host past two years to pro-series downhill mtn bike races. It is amazing to see these racers light up the course. Cool stuff.

That sounds great! The more I'm researching about Reading, the more I like it. Do you know is there any place to rent a good downhill bike?

Five of us did a ride that started in Venice, then rode to Trieste and then (mostly) Croatia. We went through Slovenia and Bosnia didn't ride in those countries for long. The route covered a good part of Istria (north west Croatia), then ferried down around Split and rode south to Dubrovnik. We ended up ferrying from Dubrovnik to Perugia in Italy (via Split) and then a few days in Italy. I've captured the route map and some commentary on the trip here - Cycle Punta Sabbioni - Perugia (IT) | Route 27 | MyCycleTour .

I did a route summary in the journal section on that web page. Might provide you with some useful info. We did this ride in the heat of the summer. It was HOT HOT HOT. Bring lots of water bottles if you go in July.

The web page above shows the summary route and the journal. You can also see a little more route detail of the first part (Venice to Rijeka) here http://www.mycycletour.com/displayro...RouteNumber=23 and for the Split (actually Hvar) to Dubrovnik section here http://www.mycycletour.com/displayro...RouteNumber=24 .
